A BIG PROBLEM

DRAINAGE OF MIRAMAR One of the biggest works, consideration of which faces the City Council during the present year—nearly two months of which have gone—is the drainage of Miramar. T..e rapid growth of the district lias forced this subject tinder the notice of the. local authority with such urgency that it can no longer be shelved. Towards the end of last year the plans were completed, but as holidays have intervened there has been little consideration given them by the members of the council. Up to the present inconsiderable patches of Miramar have been attended to, but the result is not very satisfactory, as both storm water and sewage have found their way into the ejector tanks. In wet weather the tanks fill up too quickly for the pumping machinery to empty them, the water backs up, and so forces the sewage to the surface wherever it can, making an intolerable nuisance. This sort of thing is apt to recur even in Wellington city m stormy weather, during high water, for with the tide in the storm water backs Up and finds its way into the sewage drains, and so into private property The work at Miramar, it is sttaed, 'does not present any great engineering difficulties. The trouble is rather one of finance, as the whole iob is likely to run into a sum not far short of £200,000.
