PAHIATUA NOTES

Pahiatua, February 20. Mr. J. M. Tolmie, who for the past four years has been in charge of the mercery department of Mr. A. Pringle’s business, was farewelled by the staff on Saturday evening, and presented with a gold propelling pencil. It is Mr. Tolmie’s intention to take up missionary work in China. A challenge has been received from the holders of the “Gosling Stars” from a Woodville team of bowlers,,, to be skippered by H. P. Horne. The match will probably be played towards the .end of the present week. Mrs. J. Hartridge aud Miss Kirkpatrick, of Woodville, will judge the fancywork classes at the Pahiatua Horticultural aud Industrial Show, which is to be held to-morrow. Mr. J. Barnett has been appointed judge of the painting and drawing classes. Dr. H. T. Dawson, accompanied by Mrs. Dawson and Master D. Dawson, left for Hamilton to-day. Dr. Dawson will attend the annual Medical Conference, which will open there tomorrow.

Mesdames A. East and J. A. Welsh have been appointed judges of the cookerv and preserves section of the Woodville Horticultural Show, to be held on March 7.

Large entries are coming to hand for the swimming carnival, to be held under the auspices of the Pahiatua Swimming Club on March 3. A large number of Wanganui swimmers intend competing, including the New Zealand 100 yards champion, N. Dowsett The Carnival Park Domain Board has decided to accept the offer of the Pahiatua County Council to grade and form the road giving access to Carnival Park, the Dorflain Board agreeing to pay for the cost of metalling it. Dlr. A. Eddie, a well-known resident of the district, who was injured in a motor-car accident in Masterton on Wednesday last, and subsequently removed to the Masterton Public Hospital, is reported to be making good headway, and hopes are entertained that he will be able to return home this week.

Mrs. H. Radcliffe, of Palmerston North, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. C. Crewe. Mr. S. Gird wood, of Tuakau, Waikato, is on a visit to Pahiatua. Mrs. K. Gardner, wife of Mr. A. Gardner, of Mangamutu, died a few davs ago. The deceased lady, who was aged 72 vears, was, with her husband, one of the first to settle at Nikau in the old bush da vs. is. widely known and esteemed. The family con lists of three sons and two daughters. The funeral was largely attended, am' the Rev. C. A. Fostor conducted the services at the residence and the graveside. The wreaths included one from the local Methodist Church, of which deceased had been a faithful member for many years, and a gen erous supporter.
