INTERESTING CONTESTS AT WANGANUI AND CHRISTCHURCH JACKSON STAKES WON BY KIOSK; CHIEF HANDICAP TO JOY BIRD ARIKIWAI, GOBLIN MARKET, AND SUDDEN STORM SCORE AT CHRISTCHURCH The concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting and the Canterbury Jockey Club's one-clay midsummer meeting were held on Saturday. At Wanganui, Kiosk defeated Reremoana in the Jackson Stakes; Joy Bird won the chief handicap, and Shirley the open sprint. The Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton was won by Arikiwai from Thorndale; Goblin Market scored in the Middle Park ’ Plate, and Sudden Storm won the Craven Plate after getting baddy left.

WANGANUI MEETING KIOSK’S JACKSON STAKES PRINCIPAL HANDICAP TO JOY BIRD SHIRLEY SCORES IN SPRINT (By Telegrah.—From ”Tho Watcher.”) Wanganui, February IS. The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was concluded to-day in line, warm weather. The race track was in good order and last. Calculations were upset, when Kiosk won the Jackson Stakes from the favourite, Reremoana, who only just got second from Prince Humphrey. Kiosk has always been a great sprinter, but. lie appeared to go oil colour during the holiday racing at Christmas time. That he has freshened up and is still equal lo Mew Zealand’s best he showed to-day, but both Reremoana and Prince Humphrey appeared unlucky ill tho straight. Joy Bird beat the favourite, Mundane, in the principal handicap, the Ilario Stakes, with Yoma in third place, and in the Farewill Handicap Shirley scored from Limited and Sarchee. The attendance |was good, and although the first few races saw a decrease in fotulisator returns, flic wagering picked up well later, and the day’s figures were £29,327, as against <£31,89G on the second day last year, a decrease of .£2569. The tolal for the meeting was £52,1(13. compared with £57.878 twelve months ago, a decrease of £5175. OKOIA HANDICAP. Five started in the opening event, Royal Acre and Capitulation beinsr the favourites. Sovena led from. Royal Acre and Kawhakina, with the others handy. Limosa ran up down the back and joined Sovena, and they led Kawhakina and Royal Acre into the straight. Hero Kawhakina camo on and won by a length from Sovena, who beat Capitulation by a length and a half. Limosa was handy in fourth place, and Royal Acre not far away. Fgmont form pointed to the winner, and he won fairly comfortably after ■ being prominent throughout. Royal Acre pulled very hard, and had no finishing run left. HARRISON HANDICAP. Tiega was a solid favourite for tho Harrison Handicap. Except for Hallownoon they ran in close order until the six furlongs post, where Huikai went out. dear of Waicullus. Ruanui, Hipo, and Tiega. Hallownoon ran up at the half and joined the bunch. Huikai led into the straight fiom Ruanui, Waictillus, and Tiega in close order. Once in line, Tiega hit the front, and was winning comfortably when Hipo shot out, and Tiega had to bo ridden out again to win by a long head. Huikai was three lengths away, with Waicullus a fair fourth. Ruanui was next. Tiega’s rider took things a bit too much for granted in the straight, and Hipo nearly caught him napping. It would have been a disastrous and unwarranted defeat, had Hipo got home. Nothing else hud a winning chance, and Ruanui failed rather badly. JACKSON STAKES. Tour only started in .the classic event. Reremoana was a very solid favourite, only Prince Humphrey being given much chance against him. From a walk-up start Prince Humphrey, Lysandor, and Reremoana, in close order,’ ran ahead of

Kiosk. Ab the half Prince Humphrey drew out, and led round the turn from Reremoana, Lysandor dropping right out, and Kiosk coming up just behind Rereinoana. Reremoana run up to Prince Humphrey on the last part of tho turn, and they camo into the straight together, just ahead of Kiosk. When well tn lino, Kiosk challenged, and went on to win by the best part of half a length from Reremoana, who was only a nose in front of Prince Humphrey. Lysandcr was well back. Kiosk 11’011 well, but. it. looked as if both Reremoana and Prince Humphrey were cramped for galloping space in the straight. Prince Humphrey carried 4-Jlb. overweight. Ho appeared to bo finishing stronger again at tho post than he was when first, challenged, and was headed off. and on a more roomy course tho result might have been different. FORDELL HURDLER Nucleus, Matu, and Elysianor were tho best, backed in tho hurdle race. Hymgreat, Elysianor. and I’owhiri led flic field throughout, the others stringing out, with Kilburn well back. On the last circuit, they were closing up. but half a mile from home Nucleus dropped right out, and Kilburn made a forward move. Hvmgrcat, Elysianor. and I’owhiri was still tho order at the last fence, and Kilburn had come right up- Once over, the last-named finished over I’owhiri, and beat him by three parts of a I length. Half a length away, Matu just failed to get Hymgreat for third money. Elysianor and Mountain Bell were next. Kilburn again jumped indifferently at the first obstacles, and hud a good bit of ground to make up over tho last circuit; in fact, a mile from home Corlett was at him with the stick. He responded very gamely, and also improved Ins jumping, so that ho was within striking distance as they turned for home. He then outstayed them, ami he should win good races. Powhiri had every cliar.ee. Hymgreat ran. well, but was not good enough, nor was Matu. Elysianor again ran well, and had he not been crowded at the last fence, be might have been hard to beat. Nucleus ran as if she has had enough for the time being. AUTUMN HANDICAP. King Midas and Polydectcs were equal favourites for the Autumn Handicap, with Ladykiller solidly supported. \\ ar Wings, Whisogne, ami King Midas were the leaders early, but at the five furlungs King Midas was dropping out. War Wings, Whisogne, Polydectcs, were well clear of King Midas on the turn with Some Lad, Ladykiller, and Discourse moving up from the rear. Polydectes was lending Whisogne as they moved for tho judge, but Discourse and Ladykiller came at him. A rattling good finish saw Ladykiller wm by a head from Discourse, who beat I’olydectes by a nose. Whisogne was a good fourth, just in front of King Midas, and then came .Some Lad and Service. It was a tine finish, with very little between tho first four or five, and the result was form well established. King Midas was a disappointment. He was well placed early, but in tho middle stages Barry was hard at him, without any result. EARLE STAKES. Nandano was a very substantial favourite for the. principal handicap, Yoma and Joy Bird being the only others backed. The leaders were Our Jack and David Garrick at the six furlongs, which was reached in Imin. 21see. ■ Joy Bird went with tho lead, and quickened the pace, followed by Our Jack. David Garrick, Yoma, and Mandane. Mandane got an opening half n. mile from home, and shot through to follow Joy Bird round tho turn. Mandane joined the leader entering the straight, where Joy Bird again ran out, and carried Mandane with her. This left a big gap on the rails, through which Yoma made his run.’ Joy Bird, however, came on best, and beat Mandane by half a neck, with Yoma a head away third. David Garrick was a moderate fourth, followed by Novar, Henna, nnd Ona. .Toy Bird won through the race being principally run over the last mile. The first half »was done at three-quarter pace, and the extra weight on Mandune told its tale. Yoma had every chance, but the others were outclassed. MATARAWA HANDICAP. There was good betting in the hack sprint. Dimmer being the actual favourite from Tho Raider, Helotis and Paul Lucerne. Thrift nnd Yawl wore badly away. Helot is, Eka, The Raider, King Mart and Dimmer began best and were well bunched to tho turn. White Ringlet and Le Champ heading the others. On tho turn, Eka, Helotis, The Raider, Dimmer and King Mart, were m close order, with White Ringlet and Le Champ handy, while Paul Lucerne was moving up. Le Champ ran round the bunch to take the lead with a furlong to go, but ho weakened in the . final pinch and Dimmer camo on to win by a very short neck from. Paul Lucerne, who got up to beat Eka by a length. Le Champ was fourth, followed by Or hit. White Ringlet, The Raider and Helotis. . Dimmer, who earned 3lb. overweight, won nicely, but Paul Lucerne hail to give him a big start. Eka carried Elb over io get B. H. Morns ami ran a good nice. Le Champ made his run on tho turn and was very wide out entering the straight, and lie might have been closer with nioro luck. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Shirley and Limited were substantial favourites for the concluding event, which was started by Mr. W. i rice, Mr. O’Connor having had to leave to catch the Auckland express. High Fin. anco allowed out first and led to the bend from Shirley, Sarckee, Melissa, Limited and Lady Cavendish. Shirley joined High Finance entering the straight, and Limited also moved up. Shirley came on. and won by three parts of a length from Limited, who beat Sarchee by two lengths and a ball. High Finance was fourth, and then camo Melissa and Lady Cavendish. lorin pointed to tho first two horses, and nothing had any chance with (hem. Sarchee ran olio of his good races. C.J.C SUMMER MEETING MIDDLE PARA PLATE TO GOBLIN MARKET ARIKIWAI WINS MIDSUMMER HANDICAP GOOD PERFORMANCE BY SUDDEN STORM The Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting was held at Riccarton on Saturday in splendid weather. The (rack was in fust order and some teresting racing was witnessed The attendance of the public was not large, and speculation was limited, the sum of £20,015 being passed through the machine, as against £20,146 for tho corresponding meeting last: .'ear, representing a decrease of £lOl. HORNBY HANDICAP. The day’s programme opened with the Hornby Handicap, for which Luminant was an outstanding favourite from Heather Lad and Quarterdeck. Moratorium and Lancer were the early leaders, but Luminant and Lancer took charge at tho far turn and led from Moratorium, Heather Lad, Last Thought and The Harp, with Quartetdeck who was slow to move off, tailing tho ’field.- The field closed on tho leaders commencing the run home, anil Quarterdeck made a forward move on the outside. MorntoriWm was in front nearing the post, but Quarterdeck finished on resolutely and won an interesting race bv a length. Moratorium, Heather Lad and Carnot passed tho post in a bunch, heads separating them lu tho order named. Imininant was next, in front of Lancer, Last 1 bought and ’The. Harp. Quarterdeck was responsible lor an nt(raelHC effort, as she «as giving ho leaders an appreciable advantage at the imme turn. She put tn some solid work from the top of the straight, and

ner run muicaiea juui vne I Chokebore filly will develop into a usci fill galloper over a distance. TRIAL STAKES. | Cynelli, Saxette, Golden Armour, I Scrambler and Te Awhina were the de- ! fcctions from the Trial Slakes, and of the eleven starters, Amor carried over a hundred tickets more than were invested on Rhondda and Scoff, while there was only moderate support forthcoming tor the Mason-trained I’hillipic. Honeycomb was the last to leave tho mark from an otherwise good start, and when the field settled down Phillipic and Some Abbey together took charge from Greyfinch. Fair Exchange and Scoff. The leading pair entered the straight clear of a bunch headed by Scoff, Greyfinch and Amor. An exciting finish ensued, Phillipic holding off Some Abbey to beat her by a length. Amor was a neek away in third position, a nose in front: of Rhondda, who was closely attended by Scoff, Greyfinch, Fair Exchange, Princess Mafalda and Honeycomb. This was the Australian-bred Philllpic’s first race since he ran second to Satrap in the Autumn Nursery on the same course in April last. He was taken to Australia last spring with Agrion, but was not raced, and on his return was treated to a spell. He was only in commission a short while prior to this meeting, and under the circuit stances his performance augurs woi. for his future racing. Some Abbey was purchased bv her present' owner trainer for a nominal sum during the West Coast fixture, and looks liKely to pay her way at the forthcoming smaller meetings in’ the south. Amor was well placed throughout, but failed in tho concluding stages, as did Scoff, who also found ’the distance beyond him. Fair Exchange had a bad passage halfway through the race and lost a promising position at; the home bend. The English gelding Honeycomb lost a lot of ground at the dispatch, but made a good run in the straight, but could nut sustain his effort. AtIDDLE PARK PLATE. Tlte four acceptors paraded for the .Middle Park Plate, ami tho bracketed pair, Goblin Alarkel and Rigmarole, accounted for the greater portion of the .£1360 invested on the race. Rigmarole was the first, to show cut from the start, and she and Full Feather led Chide and Goblin Alarket: to Hie false rail. Chide rushed to the trout when heads were turned for horn, and Full Featlier and Rigmarole were beaten inside the distance, at which point Chide had a lead of half-a-dozen lengths. Goblin Market then set o’f m putsuit « i’ the leader, and, although his task did not seem hopeful ho i--sponded to vigorous horsemanship and got up in tlio last few stri<les to gain tho verdict by half a length, j'uil leather was five lengths away third,, eight ieuglhs in front, of Rigmarole. The race provided two surprises—Hie fine effort of Chide and the disappointing pcrforinance of null Feat hi r. Goblin Alarkpt displayed lurch grit in a severe task from the distance, and there is no doubt about his galloping ability. Chide only succumbed in the closing stages, and she must be. given credit for an attractive race. Shs was responsible for the good time recorded. MIDSUMMER HA NDICAP. All acceptors paraded for the Midsummer Handicap, and in a fair Letting pool Arikiwai was installed favo trite, carrying close on five hundred tickets more than entrusted to Satrap and Thorndale,, who were fairly evenly supported. From a good dispatch, Thorndale showed out from Arikiwai, Satrap, Wild Pigeon and Assurance, and at the mile post Thorndale held a slight advantage from Arikiwai, Footfall, C<untersign, Satrap, Assurance, and Front Rank, with Wild Pigeon last. 'JLero was little change round the lop turn, and as the field swept into the strtigbt

Thorndale was still in trout of Arikiwai. with Satrap, rootfall, and Wild Pigeon close in behind. Arikiwai t-ok charge at the distance, and without being further troubled went on to win in an easy manner by two lengths fiqiu 'J tiorndalc, who stayed on to oeat Satrap by a neek tor second honours. Assurance was a tair fourth a neck in front of Countersign, with Front Rank, and Wild Pigeon next well clear of Footfall. Tho race was practically a cent Ist between Arikiwai and Thorndale, 1.-ut the former had his companion ," e D beaten over the concluding furlong, ibis was the winner’s first important success, following on his second placing in the Dunedin Cup. Thorndale was responsible for a solid race tnioughout, and again demonstrated his consistency, -’ct.-ap ha 1 a favourable jtassage, and finished on well io narrowly miss second money. Assurance showed much improvement, but Countersign, with every chance, was disappointing, l-ront Rank was never dangerous, and both Wild Pigeon and Footfall were well beaten off at the finish. LYTTELTON PLATE. Rigmarole was the only withdrawal from tho Lyttelton Plate, the Clifford bracket, Impertinence and Prickles, being a strong favourite selection. A surprise was iu store for investors, as the nttle-taucied Great Star led into the straight from a bunched field, headed by Impertinence, aud ran huuie an easy vinner by two lengths from Impertinence. Prickles finished from the middle of tlie field to beat Synonym for third money, with Amourette, Pound Note, Starshooter, and Star Raid next. This was the winner’s first appearance in public. He is a brother to lite Atom, aud was bred by his owner-traiu-CRAVEN PLATE. Sudden Storm was made an odds-on favourite lor the Craven Plate. She and Magna Charta gave trouble al tho barrier. and neither got away well., the latter being the last to move. After a furloiv- had been covered, Einora took charge" from Rascal. Gold Brick, Moorland, Sndden Storm, and Zaragoza. Slidden Storm made up her ground rounding the fop turn, and was m behind the leaders as the straight was entered. Finora retired commencing the run home, and Rascal was left in charge from Gold Brick and Sudden Storm. The finish was provided by the lastnamed pair, and in a neck-and-neek tussle to the post, the favourite got the upper hand, and secured the verdict by a. short head. Rascal was a length away third, and then camo Alagna Charta, who came front long way back, with Zaragoza. Einora, and Alaarland next. The winner was set a difficult task by giving the leaders iv-big break over ti e first three furlongs, but she ploughed the field don n in* the run home, aud fought out a game finish with Gold Brick, who only submitted to defeat in the last stride. Rascal run a good men in spite of having done little work prior to the meeting. Alagna Charta lost a lot of ground at ihe star!, and did well

io finish in behind the placed horses. Moorland was a disappointment, and stopped badly after occupying a favourable position at the turn for home. ILALSWBLL HANDICAP. Shalimar, Kameses, Fair Exchange, Bina Mangu, and Amor declind their engagements in the llatowell Handicap, for which Golden Armour was slightly better supported than Th Awhina. This pair had the finish to themselves. Golden -Armour le<l into the straight from Te Awhina, Starflighi, Money Mine, and Sea Gay. but inside the distance Te Awhina had the favourite’s measure, and went on to win with ease by two lengths and a lialt. Money Mine was three lengths away third, in front of Botor, Starflight, Wild Work, and Jarretiere. To Awhina followed up an easy victory at the recent Ashburton meeting by again outclassing the opposition in. this race. She is likely to win more important, honours for the Kiccarton trainer, B. Ellis. Golden Armour showed marked speed for five furlongs, but was well beaten in the final run. POST HANDICAP. First Sight was made a good favourite for the concluding event, the Post Ilandi-

can, and won in attractive style. Hoylake was the first out of the barrier, but was soon joined by Margaret Birney, and this pair were in front of First Sight and Money Peer, with Ophir last. Margaret Birney was first into the straight from First Sight and Hoylake, but at the distance post First Sight went to the front, and ran home a comfortable winner by a length from Margaret Birney, who beat Hoylake by a similar margin. Heads separated Money Peer and Carnot, with Ophir last. DETAILS OF THE RACING HORNBY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; second 40, third 20; minimum weight, 9.0. Nine furlongs. 9 Sir Geo. Clifford's br. f. Wee Marble has gone on the right way since be returned to Ellerslie after his successful trip on the northern circuit. The Marble Arch gelding, who has improved wonderfully since the spring, will most likely be taken to the Te Arolia meeting at the end of this month.

The Sydney sportsman, Mr. E. Moss, who paid the large sum of -I'4llXl for the Valais—Galtee Queen colt Sion when a yearling, is credited with slating that the colt had stood him in JH5,000 on the wrong side of the ledger, when be sold him last month for 1600 guineas. Sion is stated to be a colt of impressive physique, but he failed on quite a number of occasions when much was expected of him. Just as Mr. Moss got tired of backing Sion he romped home in front at Randwick.

Lady Yarborough was the first to show out, and at the four furlongs post was leading Euston from Lady Thrill, Harvest Gold Rubus, and Baringhup. Rounding the home turn Margaux on the outside had joined Lady Yarborough and Euston, with Harvest Gold close up on the rails, Lady Thrill being handy. The field entered the straight in this order, when Euston drew away and won comfortably by a length and a half. The judge could not separate Margaux and Lady Yarborough. Time, Imin, SJsec. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Vigilant.’’) Joy Bird, who in recent months has run good races on the opening day of a meeting but has frequently failed to run up to form on the concluding day, improved on her Wanganui Cup performance on Thursday by winning the principal handicap on Saturday. It is probably another instance of the improvement that her sex make towards the autumn, when their form is more reliable than in the spring or summer months. Phillipic, who accounted for the Trial Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday, is a member of R. J. Mason’s team. Phillipic, who accompanied Agrion to Sydney last trip, showed plenty of speed on the tracks there, but something happened to him. Of late he has been reported to have been a much improved horse, so his outside price came as rather a surprise. The chestnut colt by Limond from Homage, who realised 2300 guineas at the Trentham sales last month, when purchased by Mr. G. D. Greenwood, has been broken in, and he is now a regular visitor to the Riccarton tracks. According to a Sydney writer, the Limond—Makepeace colt purchased at the Wellington sales will bo trained by George Price at Randwick. The Te Awamutu-trained gelding Pegaway carried 8.4 to victory in the Herries Memorial Handicap at Te Arolia last season, and figures in that event this year as one of the top-weights with 9.0. Pegaway won several good handicaps last season, but apart from his second to Mandane in the Summer Cup, his form this year has not been nearly so good. As Ruffles is freely engaged at Te Aroha, it is safe to assume that the Quin Abbey gelding is training on quite all right and will be seen out at Hie meeting. It is some time since Ruffles had a race, but he is good when in form. Ballymoy II (says a northern exhange) will be a better mare for her racing at Rotorua, where she scored narrowly on the second day. She should have good prospects in the sprint events at Te Aroha if started there. After his performance,in winning the Putaruru Stakes at the Matamata meeting, the Some Boy II gelding. Ladies' Boy, will be in demand if raced at the Te Aroha meeting, says a northern exchange, for he displayed a lot of promise when he scored in the above race. Ladies’ Boy. who has not been up any length of time, is a very speedy gelding and is trained by C. Carmont, sen., at Te Aroha.

Wee Marble has gone on the right way since he returned to Ellerslie after his successful trip on the northern circuit. The Marble Arch gedling, who has improved wonderfully since the spring, will most likely be taken to the Te Aroha meeting at the end of this month.

“As a matter of fact, I don’t suppose (says an English writer) that one out of fifty trainers know of a dope even if they wanted to use one, though it is said that a north country veterinary surgeon used to make up a preparation of his known as ’speedy balls,’ which were in considerable demand 20 years ago amongst trainers. What they contained no one who used them knew. They may have been a mild dope in the sense of acting as does a morning bottle of ‘fizz’ to those who have had a night before.’’
