WOMEN POLICE

COMMISSIONER’S REPLY TO DEPUTATION Dominion Special Service. Auckland, February 17. That there are policewomen doing patrol and other duties in Auckland, as well as elsewhere in New Zealand, was demonstrated to a deputation from the National Council of Women by the Commissioner of Police (Mr. W. B. Mcllveney) this morning. Regulations governing the appointment and duties of policewomen were issued in September, 1919. During the course of the interview Mr. Mcllvenev stated that in that particular part of police administration and work, New Zealand was ahead of any other British-speaking nation or countrv. He showed the deputation reports from the two policewomen stationed in Auckland, giving details of their duties and what they had done dailv throughout a week. 1 isits had been paid to park , beaches, railway stations, picture theatres, and other places, and the regulations provided that the duties could be continued up till 11 p.m. if it was thought advisable. As to the request for more, policewomen, the Commissioner said such had been under consideration for some time, but finance was the difficulty. Mr. Mcllveney was then informed that the National Council of Women did not confine the request to Auckland alone, and said it would be made a national one. It was also considered that at least five policewomen should be appointed m Auckland. The Commissioner intimated that lie would be glad of their co operation in the. manner indicated.
