FIFTH BATTERY

CAMP AT FOXTON. Dominion Special Service. Foxton, February 16. Excellent weather conditions have prevailed since the men of the Fifth Battery (Wellington) went into camp at the Foxton racecourse last Saturday. The camp is ideally situated in the centre of the course. The health of the men has been excellent. On Wednesday afternoon a most successful “at home” was held, when the local public was entertained by the trainees. An interesting sports programme was arranged, and resulted as follows:—Musical chairs (on horseback) : Bombadier McKay. Medley race: Sergeant Everett. Wagon team race: Bombardier Stewart. Subsection relay: “D” Subsection. Officers’ race: Mr. Tiernev. Afternoon tea was provided on the lawn, and at the conclusion of the sports the battery “went into action” and fired several blank rounds. Captain Kean, Officer Commanding, voiced the appreciation of the officers and men of the hospitality received locally bv them, and the Mayor (Mr. Perrean) responded. During the afternoon an eleven from the camp played a local cricket team and succeded in defeating them bv 195 runs to 179. Live shell practice was held to-day, and will be continued to-morrow, and camp will be struck on Saturday.
