AUSTRALIAN BUTTER PRICES Tho Melbourne “Argus” states that, although a resolution was passed approving tho principles of co-ordination of prices and an all Australian price for butter, there are few in Victoria, even among the leaders of the industry, who understand the practical application of tho plan. Some of the principles of co-ordination as conducted in Queensland were explained by a visitor from that State. The basis of the plan is that by taking the price of butter ruling in tho State and the price of butter on the London market a mean price is reached which controls payments to the butter factories. To arrive at “equalised” price for any period all butter sold outside the Stato is regarded as a sale in London and dealt with according to the price ruling in London at a fixed date after sale. The board controlling the butter market has then three prices to consider—the price at which butter has been sold on the local market, the price in London, and the mean of these prices according to the proportions of the respective sales. The unknown factor at the time of making any such sale in Queensland is the London price, with which it will be “equalised. The board calculates the London price on the basis of gales made in London almost three months after date of shipment from Australia; that is, allowing for about eight weeks in transit and three to four weeks for the butter to be marketed. The sellers are not called upon to forgo the use of the money realised by sales for all this time, as an interim “equalisation” payment is made, and this is based on the board’s opinion of the probable price in London at the time of the sale of the butter exported. The interim payment is not always conservative, sb that it often happens that factories are overpaid for their butter, and adjustments have to be made at a later date. The result of this system is said to be that selling agents can never tell how much they will receive for any butter they may sell. For three months they have to wait until the returns are made available, and their only basis for the estimation of results is the hypothetical Erice of butter in London three months ence. WHEAT AVERAGES Although New Zealand has been growing wheat lor many years, one cannot remember a time . when a committed fixed the average rates of wheat for the season. In Australia every State deals with its own wheat crops. Thus in New South Wales out of five weighings the average was fixed at 60Jlb. to uie Imperial bushel, and the South Australian standard was put at 621 b. In the 1926-27 season the South Australian standard was 611 b., the New South Wales standard 6Hlb., and the West Australian standard 6131 b. In Victoria at a meeting convened the Corn Trade Section Committee ol the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, repicsentatives of millers, merchants, the Victorian Wheat- Growers’ Association, the Agricultural Department, Chamber ot Agriculture, and Corn Trade (Sectional Committee of tile Chamber were present. It was explained that' several hundred samples had been taken from trucks at Scabord and re, resented all the wheatgrowing districts in the State. The wheat had been well mixed. In view or tlie poor harvest, the sample was considered very good. The grain was very even and of a good, bright colour. A satisfactory feature was that the sample contained a considerably smaller propor< tion of smut than in previous years. Five weighings were taken from the bulk heap and the average was fi.xed at 6151 b. to tho Imperial bushel. Last year the standard was 61Jlb. and in 1925-26 it was 62J16. The popular belief is that wheat weighs 601 b. to the bushel, but it will be seen that the weight actually varies. Those who buy Victorian wheat this season can claim 61U.b. to the bushel. CHICAGO WOOL PRICES. Chicago, February 15. Wheat futures: March, 1 dolla.r 301 cents per bushel; May, 1 dollar 303 cents; July, 1 dollar 27J cents. PRIOE OF GOLD. London, February 15. Work has been resumed in the rise started some time ago on the junction of this and the now reef, with the intention of connecting with the lowest level from the Palmerston shaft for ventilation purposes. The back of the rise is up 20ft. fro mthe floor of the 4Coft. level. The reef is the full width of the rise, and is of friable and kindly nature. The Hauraki shaft is down to the 500 ft. level.
