The features of the day’s play were a brilliant innings for 150 by C. S. Dempster for Institute against University and a merry knock for an even century by A. W. Duncan for Old Boys against Y.M.C.A. CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

GOOD MATCH SPOILED INSTITUTE AND UNIVERSITY DRAW. ' With two such strong batting sides opposed to each other ns Institute and University, there was no earthly chance of finnlify being reached m n match limited to sqven .hours, and consequently the game, at‘the Basin Reserve yesterday was robbed of all interest. • . Institute had first use of the wicket, and Dempster and Banks gave the side a good start by putting on 90 runs. Dempster’s score stood at 130 at the luncheon adjournment, and he went on to reach 150 before being snapped up at the wickets by Mackenzie off Hollings. In all he hit'twenty-three fourers..and never made a faltering stroke. Prince. Baumber and Bilby also did well, and at 3.30 the innings was declared closed with 310 on for the loss of nine wickets. Hollings,/ McLeod, Leys and R. Trine divided the wickets between them, the last-named coming out with the best figures. Hollings and Osborn started in promising fashinn for ’Varsity, but, after scoring 19, Hollings, in . trying to force the pace, was clean bowled by Bryant, a Jeft-hander. who was bowling well. A brilliant catch ,by Dempster in the slips disposed of A. C. Tripe off Bryant, and a little later. Osborn was smartly stumped by Aitken off the.same howler, who had captqred three wickets for 30 runs off twelve overs. After Dormer had been bow-led bv Rodgers. Mackenzie came in, and the ’Varsity captain and Bailey cemented a fruitful partnership which carried the score along to 159. At 6.10, as there was no hope of finality being reached, play was stopped by. mutual, consent, the score standing at 159 for the loss of four wickets. Mackenzie played a sterling innings for his 88. The match thus resulted in a draw, each side having to ho content with one point. Bryant bowled well in taking three for 46. WEAK BATTING OLD BOYS DEFEAT Y.M.C.A. Feeble batting marked the game between Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. at the Basin Reserve. Old Boys batted first, but could only total 178, and of this modest score a'n even century was contributed by A. W. Duncan, the captain. Eton, who reached 27, was the only

batsman to render his skipper material assistance. Copeland, Browne and Smith bowled well for- Y.M C.A., who, however, could not reach the small total set them by Old Boys. The men of the Red Triangle made a feeble showing against the bowling of Malcolm, Barclay, Duncan, and Ronaldson. Browne ami Smith were the only batsmen to make the semblance of a stand, the innings closing for 148, just 30 behind their opponents’ total. Old Boys played much brighter cricket in their second knock, 239 being on the slate for the loss of six wickets when enough was cried at 6.10. Eton, Barclay, Parsloe, and W. Dustin all shaped confidently, their form being in direct contrast to that shown in the first innings. Old Bovs thus scored a three-point win by 30 'runs on the first innings. THORNDON WIN AGAIN THREE-POINT VICTORY OVER KILBIRNIE. . Thorndon had another victory yesterday, when that team scored a threepoint win in the match against Kilbirnie, played on the latter ground. Going in first. Thorndon knocked up 161, W. Monkhouse being responsible for 65 runs out of that total. In their first innings, Kilbirnie gave a very poor display, only scoring 133. The best, batsman was E. Christopherson, who compiled a useful 30. Shortly after 4 o’clock Thorndon went in again, andruns came quickly. With one man out at 5.30 for 120 runs, it was decided to draw stumps without playing on for the extra hour. The best batsman in the second innings was A. Biggar, who made 59 not out, and A. W. Gibson, who scored 35 not out. Bowling for Kilbirnie C. Armstrong look five of Thorndon’s wickets in the first innings for 57 runs, while L. Foley, who was also in good bowling form, captured four of the opposition wickets for 59 runs. MIDLAND BEAT HUTT FINE INNINGS BY F. LAWTON. Midland gained the upper hand over Hutt on the Recreation Ground, Lower Hutt, by 38 runs, after a one innings close contest. W.'wnes, Tattersall. and Ross were the chief scorers for Hutt, many boundary hits being recorded. The innings closed for 217. Midland, after ’osing the first three wickets for 31, started hitting, and Baker and Turvey quickly brought the score to the century. The Hutt bowling was generally effective, hut Midland forged ahead. A feature of the afternoon play was the advent of F. Lawton in senior matches, with a score of 88, which included two hits for six.
