DISAPPEARANCE OF CITY LANDMARKS

DEMOLITION OF D.I.C. BUILDING OLD CLARENDON HOTEL BEING PULLED DOWN Old landmarks in Wellington City are fast disappearing to make room for more modern buildings. Rapid progress is being made with the demolition of the D.I.C. building on Lambton Quay to make way for a large and more enduring structure. Large crowds daily watch the walls crashing to the ground. A start has also been made with the pulling down of the old Clarendon Hotel as a preliminary to widening Parish Street. The rear portion of the site has already been cleared. A start has also been made with pulling down sufficient of the adjoining buildings to widen the street by 20 feet on that side, and seven 'shops are to be erected there as soon as the buildings on the front portion have been removed. The street will eventually be widened on the other side also and shops erected, but the present leases have vet two or three years to run. The other portion of the scheme is to widen Old Customhouse Street from Willis Street to Parish Street, but the negotiations regarding the acquisition of the music shop have yet to be completed before this part of the scheme can be proceeded with. The work of widening Lower Taranaki Street is still at a standstill.
