BLAZE AT MARTON BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Marton, January I'2. A fire at 3 o’clock this morning totally destroyed the premises of Barraud and Abraham, farmers’ merchants, lhe building, of two stories, was very old, and the fire had a good hold when it was discovered. The nightwatchman, who attempted to arouse the manager, Mr. Keeling, who was sleeping on the top storv, got no reply, and thought the manager was out of town. A few minutes later Mr. Keeling, who had been soundly sleeping, was awakened by the room being full of smoke. He escaped by a window and got down by the signboard only just in time; a few seconds later the whole building was dl> premises contained inflammable material which menaced the adjoining White Hart Hotel and the Farmers’ Cooperative premises, but the brigade made a wonderful save of these buildings and confined the outbreak to Barraud’s. The extent of the damage is unknown, but is believed to run into several thousands. The insurances are : On the building, £2000; and on the stock, £2500, in the Commercial Union Office. THRBE CARS BURNT. BY Telegraph.—Press Association. Thames, January 12. A fire at 2 a.m. destroyed two sedan cars and one tourer in a garage belonging to Corbett and Winder, taxi proprietors. The fire had a good hold when found. One sedan was insured for £4OO, but the insurance on the others is not available. The brigade saved a residence ten feet away. There was a good water supply. A fire destroved a seven-roomed dwelling, owned by Mr. Biggar and occupied bv Mr. Fravling. lhe occupant lost the whole of his furniture and, a motor-car, which were uninsured, lhe building was insured for £1250. TWO SHOPS GUTTED. By telegraph.—Press association. Gisborne, January 12. Fire gutted two shops in Cook Street, Tolaga Bay, early this morning. The building is owned by W. A. lulloch (Auckland), and was occupied by W. Fox, tailor, and A. Singe, hairdresser. The need for protection against fireloss is obvious.
