BRITISH UNEMPLOYED
FEWER THAN A YEAR AGO Rugby, January 10. The Ministry of Labour announces that on January 2 the total number of unemployed was 1,332,300. This was 232,248 more than on December 19, but 163,539 less than on January 3, 1927. Owing to the dismissal of workers engaged for the .Christmas trade and to "extended shop time working, there is normally a large increase in the number registered as unemployed immediately after Christmas. Last year’s total for January 3 was 186,100 more than for December 20, 1926. The considerably larger increase this year is undoubtedly due to severe weather.—British Official Wireless.
