MURIWAI BEACH
POPULARITY OF RESORT. Muriwai Beach has suddenly taken a place on the map among Auckland’s popular resorts (says the “New Zealand Herald”). Last year motorists hesitated to make the trip except in excellent weather, but the all-weather road which has been completed within the last month will present no difficulty after a shower. Road conditions beyond Henderson have improved greatly since last year, and for the average driver the resort is only an hour and a half from the citv.
The attraction of the beach lies in its expanse and contrast with other West Coast resorts, where mud flats mar the outlook at low tide. Motorists also take pleasure in a run for 10 or 20 miles along the sand, and during the last few days scores of cars have been put through their paces by drivers, whose respect for speed limits disallows such trials on the highways. The vast area of the beach upsets all ordinary conception of speed The most cautious owner of a touring car does not hesitate to touch 50 miles an hour, and at this speed the beach does not impart the thrill which the same pace gives on a narrow highway. Those who are fortunate enough to have a reserve of real speed have been exploiting it to tho full lately. A number of cars which will compete at the race meeting on February 4 have been under test. Visitors to lhe beach on Saturday were treated to a display by a Miller Special racing car, which performed some yeai* ago on the Indianapolis track, United States of America. A crowd gathered as soon as rumour of the trial spread, and a spectacular run was witnessed, tlie roar of the ear’s exhaust carrying for two miles over tho sandhills. Golf enthusiasts have made tlffiir appearance on tho beach, and a small course has been laid out near Muriwai Lake.
