GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MACHINE

CRUISING RANGE OF 2000 MILES

The 8.-I. Ryan Brougham aeroplane in which Lieutenant Moncrieff and Captain Hood made their triumphant flight is constructed substantially in accordance with the standard monoplane. Additional tankage was provided, so as to give the desired cruising range, there being one large tank in each wing—larger than those used in a standard Brougham—and one fuselage tank, installed where the present front passenger seats are normally placed. The design in general is strictly in accordance with the safety factors called for by the aeronautical division of the American Department of Commerce.

Particulars of Construction. The fuselage of the machine is of welded steel tubing construction, all bracing being done with steel tubing, this eliminating the use of tie rods. The wings are of conventional “I” beam construction. Ribs are of spruce, all joints being tied together with three-ply mahogany gussets. ■ Drag bracing is done with steel aviator wire. External bracing is accomplished by the use of steel tubing streamlined with balsa wood. The ailerons are of steel tubing. The tail surfaces are of steel tubing, and all surfaces fabric is covered. The landing gear is of split type construction. Axles are of heat-treated chrome molybdenum steel tubing, and shock absorption is taken

with rubber cords. The tail skid is of heat-treated chrome molybdemim steel tubing, sprung with rubber, while the controls are of conventional stick tvpe and pedals. The engine is a Wright J-5-220- h.p. at 1800 revolutions per minute. All tanks are of terneplate, with capacities and locations as follow: — One 70-gallon each side of the fuselage in tlie wing; one 75-gallon tank in the front compartment of the cabin, making a total gasoline capacity of 215 gallons.
