SPECIAL JUSTICES
TWO WOMEN APPOINTED
Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, January 10.
The appointment of Mrs. N. E. Ferner and Miss S. E. Jackson, of Auckland, as special Justices of the Peace under the Child Welfare Act is announced. Mrs. Ferner is an associate member of the Children’s Court in Auckland, having been appointed in April, 1925, when the Court was constituted. In accordance with the provisions of the Act in that capacity she could sit with the presiding Magistrate, but could only tender advice on cases brought forward. As special Justices both Mrs. Ferner and Miss Jackson will be empowered to preside over the Court when necessary. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., and Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., are the only two at present entitled to preside over the Court, having been specially authorised. Miss Jackson recently retired from the position of matron at the Mount Albert Industrial Home after many years’ service. She has had wide experience in child welfare work and since her retirement has continued to give advice in many instances.
