LEVEL CROSSING SMASH
NOTORIOUS WANGANUI LOCALITY
Wanganui, January 10. College Street crossing was the scene of a collision this afternoon between a Powef Board lorry, driven by J. Larsen, and the outgoing 12.45 p.m. goods train to Hawera. The impact was terrific, and the lorry was hurled several feet clear of the line. The driver was also thrown clear of the lorry, and had a miraculous escape from death. Hie injured man was attended to by a doctor and conveyed to the hospital. The rear portion of the lorry was badly damaged, while the front axle was broken, and the windscreen was shattered to fragments.
The College Street crossing is the most notorious in Wanganui, and lias been the scene of previous accidents The accident to-day will again help to emphasise the need for automatic signals at the extremely dangerous 'Vatignnui crossings. On inquiry from the hocpital it was ascertained that Larsen’s injuries were not of a serious i.ature.
