In tho crowd of spectators watching the events decided bv the "Wanganui Professional Cycling Club was at least ono humourist (says tho “Chronicle.”) Half-a-dozen comyetitors were strained forward waiting for the gun, tho spectators and the officials wore tense with expectation, and many eyes were directed toward tho starter who slowly pointed the gun in the air. “Pop!”— The signal to start sounded unusually weak, and many in the crowd were perplexed. Not so the competitors, however, who set out in deadly earnest. In the official ranks, however, there was momentary consternation, and a bewildered starfer gazed helplessly at the undischarged gun. It was not unfit someone discovered that a member of the crowd had burst open an inflated paper bag that tho competitors were re-called.
