SUCCESSFUL BRITISH' FILM DIRECTOR Mr. Alfred Hitchcock, the young English film director, through a new contract he has signed with British International Pictures, Ltd., owners of the Elstree studios, has become, at the age of 28, the highest paid man in British film production. It is understood that his contract will extend over three years, and that the total sum he will receive is approximately £40,C00. At 16 Mr. Hitchcock was a clgrk in an advertising office at a salary of 15s. a week. His first connection with the film industry was tho Famous Players Company at the Islington studios, now the property of the Gainsborough Company. He has been film editor,, scenarist, art director, and assistant director. It was while he was under contract as assistant director to Gainsborough Pictures that Mr. Michael Balcon, managing director of the company, sent him to Germany to direct his first film, “Tho Pleasure Garden.”
Since then he has gone from success to success, which culminated in ‘The Ring,” described as one of the greatest films ever made in this country. Mr. J. A. Thorpe, general manager of British International Pictures, said to a “Daily Mail” reporter that they considered Mr. Hitchcock the most brilliant director in Europe. Mr. Hitchcock is now directing the film version of “The Farmer’s Wife.” which will be followed immediate!” by■ “Champagne.” with Miss Betty Ba’.our as the principal actress.
