AUCTIONEERS’ REPORTS WESTFIELD. Messrs. Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., report having held their usual weekly sale of fat stock at Westfield on Wednesday last, as under; — Beef.—There was an average yarding of beef, and a good number of cows and heifers. Competition was erratic, and values as a whole were inclined to be somewhat easier. Extra choice ox sold to 325. per 1001 b.; choice and prime 28s ro 315.; just killable, 245. to 275.,; prime voung cow and heifer beef, 245. to 27s • iust killable, 21s. to 235.

Sheep.—There was an average yarding i here being little or no change in values Heavy prime wethers made £1 6s. 6d to 51 Bs. 6d.; medium, £1 4s. to £1 6s. 3d • tight and unfinished, £1 Is. to £1 3s 6d ’■ ■:eavy prime ewee. £1 to £1 2s. 6d.; lighter 16s. 6d. to 19s. 6d.: other ewes 10s to 14s. 6d.

Calves.—A fair yarding, values being on a par with last sale. Ltd., report on tl tir Feilding sale held on Friday last — lor the first sale of the year, a ve'rv small entry of both sheep and cattle came forward to a good attendance of the public, and a good sale resulted. Fat sheep and cattle were in good demand while two pens of Romnev shorn wether lambs on account of Mr. W M. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd , report that there was a small varding of both sheep and cattle at their Feilding sale, and prices were on a par with last sale. They quote as follows:—Cattle■ Light fat heifers, to £5; springing heifers, to £8 10s;; heifers in milk, £3 17s 6d. to £6 55.; store cows, £2 135., £3, £3 ss. to £3 7s. d.; bulls, to £5 10s. SheepFat ewes. 17s to 18s. 3d.; fat wethers 265. to 275. 3d.; fat black-faces, to 255. EGG-LAYING COMPETITION MASTERTON OLUB. Dominion Special Service Masterton, January 7 The following are the results of the egg-laying competition being conducted at tho Solway poultry farm by the Maslvrton Poultry Club, for the 110th week euded to-day;—

MOTOR-BUILDING COMPETITION (Rec. January 7. 5.5 p.m.) New York, January 6. Ford’s manufacture of the new model automobile has resulted in a battle for the leadership in the small car field, which constantly increases in intensity. The first competitor to challenge Ford, following the exhibition of the latter’s new model, was General Motors, which announced that a new Chevrolet would shortly be nlaced on the market. Then camo the Willys Company, with a new low-priced whippet, while the Dodge Company. in a slightly higher-priced field, thi; week brought out its “Victory Six," adding to the generally spirited competition. Other manufacturers are expected shortly to enter the contest.

TARANAKI OILFIELDS The following report for the week ending December 31 has been issued by Taranaki Oil Fields, Ltd.:— "Waiapu No. 2 well: Drilled to 2908 ft. in shale; BJin. diameter casing to 2890 ft. Gisborne No. 1 well: Drilled to 2140 ft.; B.iin diameter casing to 2120 ft. Shale from 1935 ft. to 1940 ft.. also 1960 to 2000, and 2045 to 2060. balance sand. Samples of sand between 2000 and 2050 treated with chloroform show definite traces of oil. Showing of gas ftom 2060 to 2065. Gisborne No. 2 well: Transport somewhat delayed by rain; now nearly ready to commence construction work.”
