DEVELOPMENT OF CANBERRA
TO PROCEED ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL PLAN The Prime Minister of Australia, Sir. Bruce, speaking recently in regard to the development of Canberra, _ ,us,a “ ed that it should be held rigidly to the original plan. Being committed to the establishment of the Federal capital at Canberra, the people of Australia should make the city worthy of their great ■ nation, and should . countenance not the slightest departure from the decision and planning which emanated from a competition of worldwide scope. Mr. Bruce said that his visit to Washington had now convinced him that what had marred the development of that city might occur at Canberra. "Do not believe all the stories you hear of Canberra,” went on Mr. Bruce. "It is a most attractive place, and I can dnlv suggest that you go thete aud see' the citv for yourselves. It mv door is laid the blame for mest things which happen iu Australia, hit Canberra was decided- upon tweiity-h e rears afo. Although much inconvaiience mav be caused to some of us at the present time, we must adhere to the original plan in every detail, in order that the capital will devlop along tlie noble lines on which it was planned.”
