NELSON NOTES
A SATISFACTORY YEAR Dominion Special Service. The Nelson office of the New Zealand Tourist Bureau has . been open throughout the holidays, with the single exception of Boxing Day, and many visitors have taken advantage of the facilities provided. The establishment ot the bureau in Nelson is considered to be more than justified. The business transacted during the last month of 1927 showed a substantial increase over that ol the preceding vear. Vital statistics for the year just closed show that 91 marriage licenses were issued, against 101 for 19’~6. Births increased from -60 tn 19-b to 273 last year; while deaths totalled 160 against 159. As an indication of the extent of the tobacco industry in the district, the quantity of tobacco shipped from the port of Motueka during 1927 totalled 672 bales and 70 cases, compared with 238 cases in 1926. A considerable area is down this season, but the weather has not been altogether favourable to obtain the best results. At the same time there are some particularly good crops to be seen. . Raspberry picking is now in full swing. The crop is reported to be the average of last year. The subsidised motor service for the carriage of goods between Glenhope and Murchison at ordinary railway tariff rates will operate as from Monday, 9th inst. The drv spell which has been experienced for the last three weeks or so continues. A good soaking ram would be particularly welcome in th e districts where small fruit is grown.
