BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY

A most enjoyable evening was spent at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society on Thursday. The function was in the form of a farowell party to Mr. W. 11. Armstrong, one of tlie vice-presi-dents of the society, who is leaving on an extended visit to the branches of the society in England and the Continent. There was a very large attendance of guests from, the various ships in port and friends of the members. After supper had been served by the young ladies of the society, tho secretary presented Mr. Armstrong with a travelling companion, and wished the recipient a very pleasant voyage and safe return. Mr. Armstrong suitably responded. Games, songs, etc., were then indulged in, and a very happy time spent till 11.20 p.m., when the evening was brought to a close with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne” and "F° r He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr. Armstrong expects to be absent from :New Zealand for some months.
