“STUPID RATHER THAN CRIMINAL”
DRESS OBTAINED BY FALSE PRETENCE A plea of guilty was entered 'in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by a young married woman, who was charged before Mr. J. H. Salmon,- S.M., with having obtained a frock valued at £ll Ils. by falsely representing herself to be the wife of Dr. Stanton. . It was stated by Detective-Sergeant Holmes that accused went into a city dressmaker’s establishment, selected frocks to the value of £4O, and asked that they should be charged to Dr. Stanton’s accbunt. She was allowed to take one dress away with her. Subsequently it was found that she was not Mrs’. Stanton, her husband living in Australia. Mr. •F. Anyon, who appeared for accused, said that she had, done this foolish act as a means to obtain credit for a short time. She expected money from Australia, and was prepared, to pav for the dress when it arrived. “This is your first offence,” said the Magistrate, “and seems to me_ to be a. stupid, rather than a criminal act.” ’. Accused was admitted to probation for a period of twelve months, and her name was ordered to be suppressed.
