' The “Waikato Independent” is informed that pukekos, or native swamp fowl; ’are multiplying rapidly in tho Roto-o-rangi district, where they are becoming a pest, on account of their depredations on crops. A well-known / Roto-o-rangi resident states that pukekos have destroyed the greater part of his large field of maize. They pull the young plants up to secure the sweet stalk. He also states that these birds are doing much damage to potat’ crops, pulling the young plants up and pecking at the young potatoes. Seeing that pusekos are protected, settlers cannot destroy them.
