TOLL OF THE SURF
FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL DROWNED LYALL BAY FATALITY Just after noon yesterday bystanders at the junction of Onepti Road and Lyall Parade heard cries which were the prelude to a tragedy in which Stella Jos- - cpliine Knight, a girl only 14 years of age, lost her life. The young girl had been bathing in lie Lyall Bay surf in company with her mall brother Lennie, who is 10 years ,f age, and had been in the water for a hurt time when both the children were een to be in difficulties. The beach aretaker, Mr. McDonald, Mr. D- G. leNab, of Timaru, and Mr. Marchant, ;f the Lyall Bay Surf Club, with other nembers of the club, rushed to the resile and brought the boy to shore. Once on the beach he was soon none the worse for liis experience. Mr. McDonald and Mr. McNab carried Stella Knight from the sea, and it was seen that the unfortunate girl was at least unconscious. At once means of restoring respiration were employed, but without reSult. Dr. W. Shirer, who was communicated with at once, hastened to the spot, but on his arrival saw that nothing could be done to save the child. Stella Knight was a daughter of Mr. Knight, of Margaret Road, Wadestown, who is a messenger in the General Post Office. The body was taken to the morgue by the Free Ambulance, and will remain there until after the inquest.
