Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, is leaving England on January 14 for South Africa. After a vjsit to various agricultural centres and institutes there, he will continue his journey to New Zealand via Australia, and is due at Wellington at the end of February. News has been recieved in New Zealand from London of the death of the Rev. T. IT. Darlow, M.A. For 25 years Mr. Darlow was the literary superintendent, of the British and Foreign Bible Society and edited their magazines, the ’“Bible in the World” and “Gleanings.” Mr. Albert E. Russell, director of J. J. Niven and Co., left by the Mauiiganui yesterday on’ a business visit to Australia. He is accompanied by Mrs. Russell and Miss Bnckeridge. The Attorney-General (Hon. F. J. Rolleston) returned to Wellington from the south yesterday. The Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young) will return to Wellington from Hamilton on Monday. Mr. J. W. Collins, Secretary to the Department of Industries and Commerce, returned to Wellington from the north yesterday. Mr. J. M. Samson was a passenger to Sydney yesterday by the Maunganui on a business trip to Australia. Mr. Ove Lunn, Consul-General for Denmark, in Australia and New Zealand, with Mrs. Lunn, left Wellington for Christchurch and Dunedin last night. • Mr. Lunn lias visited New Zealand on several occasions, and is on his way back to Sydney after an official trip to Denmark. Mr. W Allnutt, for some years accountant at the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., Wellington, has been appointed manager of the new branch of the Union Bank opened at Courtenay Place Mr. R. W. Jack, of Dunedin branch, has been appointed accountant at Wellington branch. Mr. W. W. Hackett, managing director of Accles and Pollock and 'lubes, Ltd., Birmingham (England), will arrive in Wellington from America by the Makura on January 16. Mr. Hackett is the member of a very well-known family in Birmingham; one of his brothers, Mr. Thomas Hackett, being works manager for Cadbury’s, and another, Mr. Alfred Hackett, being manager for Bird’s Custard Powder Company. Just before leaving Home, Mr. W W. Hackett presented the suburb of Alburv with fourteen acres of land, a valuable contribution to (lie Duke of Xprk’a jjcheme*
