If we are to have a great export business in frozen pork it must be established on a sound basis. An export subsidy is not a sound basis. It may encourage dairy farmers to embark upon a business which will thrive only while in receipt of a subsidy, the withdrawal of which would prove fatal, and divert their attention from another branch of their industry which is sounder. We believe the export of frozen pork will grow, subsidy or no subsidy, and, taking one year with another, prove profitable. and we give Mr Coates credit for a desire to help the industry. Nevertheless we believe the principle is unsound and that if the producers and exporters of beef were to go to Mr. Coates and demand an export subsidy he would, find it difficult to satisfy them.— “Taranaki News ” Girls of twelve years are old enough to be married under tlie British law; but there have been no such marriages in that country for twelve years.
