AUCKLAND BANKRUPTS

RECORD TOTAL LAST YEAR Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 5. There were 220 bankruptcies last year in Auckland, a district which includes North Auckland except Whaugarei, and stretches as far south as laumaruuui, excluding Hamilton and Rotorua. The total is a record, although 1927 was not a good vear from the economic viewpoint. The total is not considered to be really indicative of conditions in the district. Many of last year s bankruptcies were the result of bad times. Earlier businesses which were affected by the slump of 1921-22 have increased the bankruptcies of the past two or three years, and it is believed this year will see an appreciable decline in business failures.

Farmers, shopkeepers and builders accounted for a great number of bankruptcies last year. Of the total of 220 in the Auckland district fully one-third concerned persons following these occupations, the number of each of these traders being about the same. Contractors and agents were also high on the list About 40 other trades were represented from that of labourer to merchant.
