No less than four bridges on the. Wai-roa-Waikaremoana and Napier-Wairoa Roads sustained structural damage of one kind or another during the course of a recent week-end (states the Napier “Telegraph”). It is. evidence of the fact 'that the motorist in holiday mood is perhaps not the careful driver of other times of the year. The shrill little bell under the steeple at Nelson Street School, which, during the past half-century, has summoned thousands of young Aucklanders to their day’s work, sounded the death knell of the old school recently, and the expupil who pulled on the rope was the first to ring that self-same bell when the school was opened, forty-eight years ago (says the “Star”). “Forty-eight years ago, it is, since the bell first rang. I remember the day quite well,” said Mr. F. C. Gallot. “I came up from the old private school in Union Street, when Nelson Street School was established, and, being one of the headmaster’s old pupils, I was selected to call my school-fellows to their work, fin tho first day when I rang the bell—the same old bell! —there were less than 200 children, if I renmmber aright. Since then I have heard the bell ring thousands of times, as my work is handy, and it will seem strange to hear it no longer.” As the first and. last, of the bell-ringers relinquished his toiling at tho rope, there fell a little silence. The cheering stopppd. tho cries, dropped to a murmur .and died. Then, in the silence, the old bell tinkled twice or thrice ns if reluctant to be stilled, and finally settled down to. its long rest.
