The remnants of the Shansi Army are desperately resisting further Fengtien advances. A fierce battle is progressing on the L’ekiug-Suiyuan front. Streams of wounded are pouring into Peking, and the hospitals are filled. Both sides suffered heavily. The Fengtieu army captured two brigade commanders and seven regimental commanders. A reward of 400,090 dollars is offered for the head cf Yen Hsi-slian, Shansi’s rebel Governor. A prize is offered for the occupation of Shinnhaichuang. Madame Wu, wife of the Nationalist Minister of Foreign Affairs, visiting relatives at Tientsin in anti-Nationalist territory, was arrested while boarding a steaerar en route for Shanghai. The Soviet Consul at Changsha, M. Sorokin, has been advised to leave bj’ the Chinese authorities. He is blamed for the unsettled conditions and bandit outrages. STEAMER RANSACKED BY PIRATES (Rec. October 13, 7 p.m.) Hong-Kotig', October 12. Swatow reports that the position is still uneasy. A British naval party boarded a British steamer, driving off 300 soldiers seeking a forced passage. The Canton situation is critical, Li Chai Sun, a moderate, being ousted by Chang Fatkwai, who is well known to be a Red labourite allied to the Hankow clique. There has been much faction fighting in the streets. The Chinese steamer Sbingon, trading between Hong Kong and Wuchow, was pirated on the West River, and sixty Chinese passengers were kidnapped.
