RADIO CHARGES

FROM LAND AND SHIP STATIONS

RECOMMENDATIONS TO CONFERENCE

BY TELEGRAM.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. (Copyright.) (Rec. October 13, 7.30 p.m.)

Washington, October 12.

The sub-committee on tariffs has adopte 1 a standard of 40 gold centimes per word from ship stations and 60 gold centimes per word from land stations for all messages to and from mobile stations, as proposed by the Australian delegation. A subsequent proposal agreed to was that land stations should have the option of increasing the charges above 60 gold centimes per word in cases where high capital investment and maintenance costs warrant them. Australia proposed that a ship station should not be given a similar option, also the limitation of free distress messages for rendering assistance in emergency cases. Final action on these matters was deferred for consideration bv the main committee.

Technical Sub-committees 2 and 3 reported favourably upon the adoption of a system of kilocycles and frequencies, instead of metres and wave lengths, and it is believed that the conference will adopt the report. The kilocycles system would simplify the detection of radio interference.
