DUNEDIN’S ELECTRIC POWER SCHEME
NEW DAM TO BE BUILT Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, October 13. A special meeting of the City Council was held last night for the purpose of considering a proposal to abandon the 43ft. high dam at the mouth of the Waipori Gorge, and to construct a dam 110 ft. high 300yds. lower down the gorge. The business was set out in a report submitted by the Electric Power and Lighting Committee as follows: — “Your committee now begs to recommend that authority be given to proceed with the erection of the dam in the Waipori River on a site approximately 300 yards down-stream from the site of the existing dam. The ultimate height of the proposed dam will be 110 feet, thereby taking full advantage of our statutory authority. The estimated cost of the new tvpe of dam as submitted by tlfe city engineer is £226,225 (which figure includes the sum of £B6OO for plant already purchased and paid for), with .the 'possibility of an expenditure of a further sum of £lO,OOO should it be found necessary to carry the foundations down to solid rock over the whole of the site.”
The report was adopted on a unanimous vote.
