£20 FINE AND LICENSE CANCELLED

INTOXICATED MOTORIST PUNISHED

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, October 13.

As a sequel to a motor accident which occurred near Penrose last niglit, when a motor-car containing four men crashed into a steel transmission standard and was wrecked, Harold McCloughen, aged 24, who had driven the car, was arrested for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car. He appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, pleading guilty to the charge. Sergeant Turner said that McCloughen was driving the car with three other men. He had driven io Papakura, and it was while they were returning to Auckland that the accident occurred. One of the occupants, a man named Daniel McLaren, was at present in the hospital suffering from concussion of the brain. The car was badly damaged. Nothing was previously known against accused, who admitted having had a number of drinks.

“What’s your occupation?” asked Mr. Hunt of accused.

McCloughen said that he had been a community bus driver, but was at present out of work.

“Well, you won’t drive another car for a long while,” Mr. Hunt told him. Accused said that the car belonged to two of the other men who were with him yesterday. He added that he was a single man. In fining accused £2O, or three months’ imprisonment, and cancelling his license for two years, Mr. Hunt said that the position was not the same as if accused owned the car himself.
