STEEL AND IRON PIPES

DUTIES APPROVED. The House of Representatives last night approved of the tariff proposals relating to pipes, notwithstanding a contention by Mr. W. A. Veitch (Wanganui) that there was no reason why thesmaller sizes of steel and iron pipes should not be- protected to the same extent as larger sizes. Mr. Veitch appealed to’the Minister to give way on the point. The Minister: When I give way I am called weak, and when I don’t give way I am called obstinate. Mr. Veitch: If the Minister would give way on this point I would call him just. (Laughter.) The Minister of Customs said there was evidence of strong opposition from the gas companies and certain local bodies against any increase in the duty.
