SOUTH ISLAND SHIPPING
SCOPE OF INQUIRY. In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr. T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South) asked if the Government could see its way to change the order of reference of the Joint Committee that had been set up to inquire into South Island shipping services. He wished the committee to have power to inquire into the itinerary of the new Government fruit steamer which is to trade with the Islands, ft was'of great importance that she ■ should trade with South Island ports. The Prime Minister said he had no objection, and he would ascertain whether the order of reference could be changed. He had had a lot of correspondence Within the last few days on the subject. The Government when fixing the time-table and freights had gone carefully into the matter of the South Island fruit trade in particular. He would like the committee to have before it all the information possible. POST AND TELEGRAPH OVERTIME “Is it a fact that the payment of overtime to the lower paid employees in the Post and Telegraph Department lias been stopped, and that instead the men have to take time off, and, if this is correct, why has it been done?” Notice of this question was given to the Postmaster-General in the House yesterday by Mr. E. J- Howard (Christchurch South).
