DOMINION MANUFACTURES

COMPREHENSIVE DISPLAY. “For many years New Zealand people have failed to appreciate the importance of manufacturing from our own materials,” said Mr. W. H. Honey, the organiser of the pageant of industries, yesterday. "To-day. however, New Zealand is entering on a new phase of her prosperity. The value of manufacturing has been realised, goods which formerly were made in other cou:*ries are now being produced in New Zealand by New Zealanders, and should be used by the people of the Dominion. . , . , "The pageant of industries, which will be opened by the Prime Minister in the Town Hall nt 8 o’clock on October 25, issues its proud challenge, firmly establishing this country as a manufacturing nation of no small importance. Over one hundred manufacturing companies will exhibit the products of New Zealand.” The exhibits, he stated, will range from photographs to great steel castings, from tools of trade to furniture. There are few articles used in modern life which cannot he manufactured locally, and a list of displays, which include, amongst others, such products as hats, leather goods, paints, confectionery, rennet, oils, tobacco, electric stoves, hosiery, and braces, show what is made in the Dominion. "The educational value of these exhibits cannot lie stressed too much,” he said. “A large percentage of the public are in ignorance of the progress made in local production, and are apt to accept as true the allegation that New Zealand cannot manufacture goods of sufficient duality to compete with those of other countries. This is not the case, and it will be proved conclusively that New Zealand can more than hold her own.”
