WHITHER IS SPAIN HEADING?

MADRID POPULACE IN MOOD OF FRIGHTENED EXPECTANCE COUNTRY GROANING FOR LIBERTY The special correspondent in Madrid of the London “Daily Express” draws a dark picture of conditions in Spain. He declares that everyone in Madrid is in a mood of frightened expectancy, and that plots and counter-plots are continually being discovered.

The special correspondent of the “Daily Express,” in an uncensored message from Madrid, asks: “Whither is Spain heading? Here in Madrid everyone is in a mood of frightened expectancy. Plots and counter-plots are being continually discovered, and hundreds are being clapped in prison. General De Rivera has been in office four years, but Spain still awaits the dawn of liberty. The National Assembly is mere eyewash. Numerous par-

ties have decided to boycott the Assemblv, including the Socialists and the Federation of Trade Unions. The nation knows that the Assembly will not give liberty back, and for liberty Spain is groaning. General De Rivera’s power formerly depended upon the army, but now upon the police. A disquieting sign in Madrid is the number of wounded everywhere, just back from Morocco, where hitherto it was believed that all fighting had ceased. The King’s popularity in Northern and Central Spain is waning.”
