SINGLE AND TWIN SCREWS. A recent attempt to determine accurately the relative value of single and twin screws on vessels has left the position still doubtful. The motor tankers Bianca and Raila, of 11.250 and 11,180 tons displacement, respectively, were recently made the subjects of a series of careful tests. The Bianca is a single screw vessel, and the Raila a twin screw. Both vessels have six-cylinder Diesel engines, developing 2800 h.p.. aud are practically identical in design. Careful records of the speeds, oil and fuel consumption were kept, but a careful examination of these showed that there was nothing to choose between the two vessels. Tho only appreciable difference was that the single screw vessels needed slipbtly more power for a given speed than did tho other. The result of the trials is not likely to influence, the opinions of shipowners (savs the "Motor Ship’’). The smaller staff and the fewer and simpler working parts of the single screw engine are offset bv the slightly lower initial cost and and the lighter individual parts of .the twin screw engine. Tlie Norwegians prefer the twin screw, but British owners, who have always favoured the singlescrew cargo steamnr, have several singlescrew motor vessels, designed to do 14 and 15 knots, now building at various yards.
