TAWA FLAT DEVIATION

Sir, —There is one question I would like to ask Mr. Fulton and your other correspondents who are now criticising the route adopted by the Government for the new deviation to Tawa. Flat. Why did Mr. Fulton wait until one of the contracts bad been let and much preliminary work done before condemning the Government proposals ? It is nearly eighteen months ago that a deputation representative of all the public bodies in and around Wellington waited on the Prime Minister in order to get ihe Government to make an early start with the proposed work. Why did Mr. Fulton and his friends not come forward then and point out to the Government the advantage of their route over the one adopted ? At that time the Department might have paid more attention to them. Instead of that nothing was said during the whole of the twelve months following *n which the Public Works Department was being continually urged to make a start with Jhe deviation. Now however, when the Government has already let the contract for cue of the tunnels and called for tenders for the other one there are those who want the Government to consider other routes Unless they can prove that a very grave blunedr is being made by going on with the present scheme, I am afraid their protests are rather late in the day.—l am. etc., J. R ROXBURGH, Hon. Secretary, Tawa Flat Progressive Association. Tawa Flat, October 10
