HAWTHORN HEDGE
FARMERS’ PROTEST AT DESTRUCTION.
Dominion Special Service.
Nelson, October 12
Discussing at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Provincial Farmers’ Union hawthorn hedges and their relation to fireblighf, a speaker said that if the necessity of putting the Act regarding the demolishing of hawthorn hedges into operation arose, it would be a very serious ma’ter for some farmers. This' unpleasant liability was facing them, and it was a matter which must be carefully gone into. He considered the Minister did not realise the possible cost of eradication, .and expressed the opinion that compensat’on in some shape or form would be inevitable. A resolution was passed that, while desirous of assisting the fruit-growing industry in combating the ravages of fireblight by the gradual eradication of hawthorn, the union emphatically protest against the arbitrary destruction of private property without compensation, and, that the Minister of Agriculture be invited to visit Nelson with the object of making a .personal inspection and meeting a sub-committee of the union.
