RELIEF WORK

MORE MONEY AVAILABLE The Government has agreed to subsidise the £2300 offered by the Wel-\ lington Show Association to expedite the creation of a road deviation from Hutcheson Road, and an immediate start is to be made on the undertaking. The Show Association made its offer some time ago, but the decision of the Government had to be awaited. The men will commence within a couple of days, and yesterday the Mayor voiced his appreciation of the fact that the money was available at this juncture, when city works had just been completed. The new road will be 30 feet wide, with a 6-feet footpath, there being no footpath in the present Hutcheson Road. It is hoped that the undertaking will occupy men who have been labouring at the widening of Ngaio Road, ca Palliser and Happy Valley Roads, the formation of the Vogeltown tennis courts, and the extension of the Pirie Street reserve, and that there will be work for others as well. It is estimated that 100 men will be put on the new job.
