At the Stratford Magistrate's Court the other day one witness was blessed with a very decided accent (says the Stratford "Post ). Hie own counsel, in getting out the fact that the witness had not been long in New Zealand, remarked that it was not necessary to ask where he had come from; but it appeared as f it was necessary for Mr. Coleman said to the witness- "You are only recently from England.” to which the witness replied: "No. Scotland." How decided the accent was can be gauged from the fact that counsel accused the witness of saying "twenty." when, as he indignantly assert- 1 I. he had actually said “thirty. The accent proved a stumbling block on many occasions, but, after numerous statements had had to be repeated, the witness finally .got his story told.
