CAR PARKING

INQUIRIES IN AUSTRALIA

Palmerston North, October 11

Recently the Palmerston North Chamber of . Commerce wrote to the municipal authorities in both Melbottrne and Sydney in regard to the systems of car parking in force in those cities. Replies were received to-day from the Police Department in Sydney, and from the town clerk of Melbourne. It was pointed out that in Sydney, where narrow streets were used for trams, as well as for ordinary vehicular traffic, conditions were very different from those in other cities. It was stated, also, that in Melbourne there was in vogue a system by which motorists could'pay a ■shilling per day for the privilege of parking their cars in regular parking places. These letters were discussed at today’s meeting of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, when it was suggested bv the president (Mr. M ■ A. Elliott) that the question of motorists paying for parking privileges should be referred to the transit committee of the Borough Council. He pointed out that motorists would probably be pleased to pay this sum if they were sure that by so doing they would guarantee the safetv of their cars. It was pointed out, however, by other speakers that there was little motor thieving in Palmerston, and that motorists could obtain similar service from any garage for the payment of a smilar sum.

It was decided to take no further action in the matter.
