BOWLS

MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. Members of the Wellington Bowling Centre met for their monthly meeting last night, Mr, M. Marks presiding. The Dominion Bowling Association wrote stating that at their annual meeting correspondence was received from the Melbourne Bowling Association suggesting the playing of Test matches with a minimum of four rinks alternatively in Australia and New Zealand, the first Test to take place in Melbourne from December 22 to 21. “Tho principle of playing Test matches,” continued the communication, “was affirmed by the council and it was decided that tho centres bo written to, inviting applications from players willing to make the trip. It would be understood that to send away four rinks up to Test standard, players must be of good calibre, otherwise it would be of little use sending a team to contest such an important event. If more than the required number are available, those not selected in the Tests could still visit Australia and take part in the Melbourne bowling carnival, which takes place at the same time as the Tests would be played. Three selectors from each island have been appointed to select the team.” Mr. Marks said that when in Melbourne recently he saw the vice-presi-dent of tho Victorian Association, who said it was hoped (o receive six rinks from New Zealand. Six Australian States would be represented at tho State championships at Melbourne in December and it was anticipated that New Zealand was to put in a rink for each of the Slates and a New Zealand team to nlay tho whole, of the coinbined teams. The centre decided to ask delegates to bring the matter before their clubs and ask players who considered themselves capable of representing the Dominion in rinks for. Australia to communicate with tho Dominion Bowling Council through the secretary of the centre by October 31.

Four Rink Championship. In accordance with notice of motion given bv tho Hataitai Bowling Club, tho club’s delegate, Mr. J. Kershaw, moved that a four rink championship be played, to be called the Wellington Centre four rink championship, the winning club to be awarded the Flvger Shield and to be presented with a framed certificate from the club’s pavilion.

Mr. Kershaw said that each club desiring to take part must enter four rinks, each game to be nineteen heads and to commence not later than 5.45 p.m. Tho final would bo of 21 heads. Mr. S. XL Stone said that most clubs had difficulty in getting off their club competitions, am! personally he thought that for the first year of daylight saving things should be left as they were at present. Mr. Kershaw said ho was quite prepared to amend the motion to read that the four rink championship be played provided ten or more entries were received. Mr. Stone moved as an amendment that tho matter stand over till next season. On being put to the vote the motion was carried, the chairman stating that if ten entries were received tho competition would bo held. It was decided in the event of ton entries not being received for the four rink championship that the Flyger Shield be awarded to tho centre tournament. Centre Tournament. Mr. Kershaw moved that the following additional conditions be included in the annual centre tournament That the entrance fee be increased to 7s. Gd. per player; that an allowance of 9d. per player per day be granted to each club on whose green the tournament takes place; that in addition to the framed certificates a trophy of the value ot dil Is. be awarded to each member of the winning team. Messrs. Kershaw and Stone thought tho additions suggested were necessary to make the centre's tournament more attractive.

The chairman said there was provision in the present conditions for the presentation of a framed certificate to each member of the winning team. “In my opinion,” said .Mr. F. IV. Meadowcroft, “it would be a retrograde stop to offer a trophy to each member of tho winning team as suggested. I am in sympathy with the first two clauses of the motion. Whether the trophy was five shillings or «£5 I am not in sympathy with it. I move that the last clause ue struck out.” Air. B. G. H. Burn supported Mr. Aleadowcroft, and said he was strongly opposed to the giving of trophies. The certificates were neatly framed. On the casting vote of tho chairman the amendment was carried. Amendments moved by Mr. Stone that the first two clauses be rejected and that the entrance fee be live shillings as at present were also carried. A resolution was carried congratulating Air. T. K. Sidey, M.P., on the enactment of his Daylight Saving Bill.
