CAMPAIGN TO STIMULATE IT IN UNITED STATES

AND COMPLETE WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL

Washington, October 9.

A nation-wide campaign is announced here in an effort to raise thirty million dollars for the completion of the Washington Cathedral and the stimulation of religious life through the entire country through a far-reaching dissemination of Christian teachings.

General Pershing is chairman of the National Committee, and the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Andrew Mellon, treasurer.

Senator George Pepper, of Pennsylvania, executive chairman, said that the present plan is in the spirit of the proposed Government outlay of a hundred million dollars for the puroose of building and beautifying. The Cathedral will form an enduring memorial to the national spirit of devotion, and will include a preachers’ college and boys’ and girls’ school, and a theological library containing 20,000 volumes. The building affords standing room for 27,000 persons and will be situated on the highest point in Washington, on top of Mount St. Alban. .The entire project is planned to centralise and unify religious activities, organised with a national and international viewpoint, similar .to American economic and administrative agencies.
