THE RACING WORLD

FINAL DAY OF AUCKLAND SPRING MEETING

STAR STRANGER AND MASK DEAD-HEAT IN CHIEF HANDICAP

AUSSIE WINS EPSOM HANDICAP; MUSKET STAKES TO CHIT

Unusually interesting racing marked the concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting. The King ’Edward Memorial Handicap ended in a dead-heat between Star Stranger and Mask; Aussie repeated, his first day's good showing by winning the Epsom Handicap, and the Musket Stakes was won by the Wellington-owned Chit.

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, October 10

The spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club concluded at Ellerslie today. Fine weather attracted a large attendance. The course was in excellent order, and first-class racing was witnessed. The amount handled by the totalisetor for the dav was £13,913 10s., compared to £39,203 on the corresponding day last vear, an increase of £l7Ol 10s. The receipts for the meeting totalled £113,7-13, as against £95,970 10s. last year, an increase of £17,772 10s. NORMANBY HANDICAP. First dav’s form pointed to Manly and Wild Pigeon running well in the Normanbv Handicap, and they were well backed. Manly did not take long to get to the front, and he held his lead all the way, to win by n length from Arch Queen, who ran a good race all the way and finished well. Romantic was a close third, Bold Front was fourth, Wild Pigeon fifth, and Abbey Day, Star God, Mid Alonsoa next. Wild Pigeon did not get the best of passages. Arch Queen, Ash Iray, and Romantic were well enough placed at the home turn to win had they been good enough. MANUKAU HURDLES. Anchor scored a very simple victory iii the Manukau Hurdles. He took charge lialf-way through the contest, and he and Kamehameha were well clear of the field over the last hall 1 mile, but in the run home Anchor drew away and won easily by six lengths, with Blue Sky eight lengths away third, and Kendal fourth. ■ EPSOM HANDICAP. Civility was backed dchvn to a very short price in the Epsom Handicap, and Aussie was at a comparatively good figure. Finelli gave a lot of trouble at the barrier. Ballymoy 11, Gold Acre, and Aussie began best, and Civility was soon in a hopeless position on the rails. Finelli led across the top and into the straight from Aussie, who was going easily. Aussie came on to win nicely by three-quarters of a length from Tinakoa; Covent Garden finished third three lengths away, and Civility, who had a bad run, was fourth, Grand Knight fifth, and Ballymoy II sixth. * KING EDWARD MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Star Stranger and Mask carried the big money in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, and the public were right on the mark, for they dead-heated for first place. Great Charter went to the front at the start and led from Sleepy Sol, Mask, and Desert Glow. Along the back Royal Mint moved up. Star "Stranger was a long way back, but crossing the top he improved his position, and there, too, Nippy was handily placed. Great Charter led into the straight from Sleepy Sol, Mask, Desert Glow, and Star Stranger, who was wide out. Great Charter weakened in the last furlong, and in a great finish Mask and Star Stranger dead-heated. Great Charter was a length and a half away third, Desert Glow fourth, and Nippy, Transformer, Lord Star, Desert Glow, and Barometer next. Star Stranger ran a great race, as he came from a long way back, but if Mask had not had to pull outside another horse in the straight he would have won outright. Nippy should soon do better. ONEHUNGA STEEPLECHASE. Taitaiata was withdrawn from the Onehunga Steeplechase because lie was sore, and Pendavies was made a better favourite than Glenotus. There were only the two starters. Glenotus fell at the water jump and ducked himself and his rider. Rae remounted him, but by then Pendavies had a lead of half a mile, and eventually he won by two furlongs. MUSKET STAKES. Prodice was a warm favourite in the Musket Stakes, but Chit, after being troublesome at the barrier, got away well, and won very easily. Chit led correscate, Marion’s Birthday, Shot Silk, and Prodice to the straight, and then drew away to win by four lengths from Marion’s Birthday, with Prodice three lengths away third, Orewa fourth, and Look Out fifth. Look Out was left several lengths at the barrier, and ran a fair race'. Chit surprised everyone by the way she ran on, but Prodice was disappointing. LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. The meeting ended with the Liverpool Handicap, for which Thaw was a warm favourite. Kiosk and Day Guard made the early running from Gala Day and Quificoma, with Le Choucas next. Le Choucas was always going well, and he entered the straight with Day Guard and Kiosk, and stayed on best to win by a neck from Master Doon, who finished well and beat Day Guard by a head for second place. Gala Day, Sir Archie, Kiosk, Hipo, and Archeno followed. Le Choucas was always going well, and he showed a glimpse of his old time form. Gala Day was a trifle unlucky in the straight. Thaw got left badly, and Kiosk failed in the last furlong. RESULTS IN DETAIL NORMANBY HANDICAP. of <OO sovs. One mile. 3 Messrs. C. A. and B. Arnold’s Manly, 8.11 (McTnvish) 1 10 Mr D. S. This was agreed to. •

A communication was received from Mr. 11. Coyle accepting the position of handicapper. Advice was received from Mr. W. P. Russell, of Wellington, that owing to his having to handicap for the Thames meeting ho would be unable to judge at the Masterton spring meeting. It was decided to appoint Air. ,T. Cameron, of Palmerston North, as judge. One member resigned and twenty-four new members were elected. It was decided to carry out improvements to the water service at the racecourse to ensure a better supply on race days.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The- Watcher.’') Chit’s win at Auckland yesterday was a case of perseverance rewarded. She is a very speedy filly, but W far. not quite etfual to classic standard. Tim Makura. which arrived at AVellingtoii'.vesferday from Sydney, brought back several New Zealanders who have been attending the A.J.C. meeting. Prominent amongst them were Messrs. R. J. Mason. J. McFarland, H. E. Card, J. McMahon, W. A. Scott. K. Cowan. D. Bohan, and L. I. Traill.

Laughing Prince coughed .luring and after the race for the Great Northern Guineas, and his trainer thought that ho must either have got a lump of earth in his throat, or have been sickening for a cold.

The win of I’alefa at Auckland on Saturday in the Great Northern Guineas is notable for the fact, that he beat Great Charter pointlessly, whereas lie was beaten in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas by Doree, who was not considered good enough to take to Auckland.

In the Shade accidentally interfered with Great Charter turning into the straight in the Great Northern Guineas, and on being pulled out to make more room ho ran wide. This enhances the merit of his second placing, and In the Shade is going to be. a decidedly useful three-year-old, who may stay well.

Pnleta has been a very profitable investment for Mr. J. A. Todd, although lie gave four figures lor him early last season. The Australian trip would cut a slice out of tlm profits, however, and Paleta can bo regarded as unlucky that ho was not iiMc to show his best form in Sydney. IS - does not, in fact, look fully recovered yet, but he is improving, end will always be hard to beat up to a mile at least. Whether he will run on has yet to he discovered, but if he docs lie will not be far short of a highclass three-year-old.

Delightment pleased his friends and connections by the race he ran in the Mitchclson Cup. He is a fine-looking horse, and while ho certainly had a handy weight, it was a first-rate performance for a first attempt over a journey, and in the best of compnv. Trained for long journeys, Delightment should soon win big handicaps.

Tho Trentham-trained Tresham had only one horse behind him at the finis’r of iho Mitchclson Cup. and that was Lord Star. Otaki would have been easier.

Royal Mint, who ran so well at Avondale, was never in the dangerous division of the Mitchelsou Cup. He stayed out tho journey well, however, better than a lot of the others, and should not bo overlooked on a soft track.

An incident that attracted attention in the birdcage at Ellerslie on Saturday as the Mitchclson Cup horses were parading was a determined effort by Mint Leaf to kick To Monanui. “Trying to get one back on to him for leaving the stable,” remarked a humorist in tho stand.

Although squarely beaten in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes on Saturday, Knightlike ran a good race, and it is likely that ho will show up again soon, especially when drawn wider out and given time to find his feet. He drew No. lon Saturday and had to be kept at it from the word “go” in order- to maintain his position, and he is not the brilliant type of two-year-old.

Envoy, the two-year-old colt by Absurd from Bronze, trained at Ellerslie by J. Buchanan tor Mr. T. Impey, is a solid, nuggety-looking customer very much after the style of Agrion. . He was, it will be remembered, the highest priced youngster at the Trantham January sales, fetching 1025 guineas. His etart in the Welcome Stakes on Saturday was his first race, and he was too backward to show up in the running.

Star Stranger renders himself liable io rehandicap for the Now Zealand Cup on account of his dead-heat with Mask yesterday. Mask is not engaged in tho New Zealand Cup.

The raising of Royal Game, to 9.5 in the Kurow Handicap after his win at Geraldine was not rehandicapping, as published, but was a set penalty.

Avant Courier, who defeated the A.J.C. Derby winner Trivalve in tho Caulfield Guineas on Saturday, cost his owner (Mr. E. M. Pearce) 5500 guineas as a yearling, a record price for Australia, lie won his first race at Moonee Valley on September 2.1, and on October 1 was third in the V.R.C. October Stakes. Avant Courier is thus beginning to justify his high price. He is brother to Valicare and' Lausanne.

Kiccarton reports state that one of Centrepiece’s joints has filled, and he will not be seen out for some time.

The two-year-old Paper Money filly Endorse is to return from Sydney, and will run. all going well, in the Wellesley Stakes. The cabled result of tho race for the Gimcrack Stakes, in which she finished third, did not give any idea of the merit of her performance, but returned New Ze.ilanders by the Makura yesterday stated that she ran a very good race, and is a good class filly. Tho track was heavy nnd against her. but Endorse satisfied the critics that she is good.

According to all accounts Merry Mint got tho best run of any horse in the A. J. C. Derby, and was defeated because ho could not see out tho journey.

liuthair has lost all form in Sydney. She ran a very bad race in the Craven Plato, finishing last. She was a starter in the Waverloy Handicap on Saturday, and finished out of a place. Mr. R. A. McKenzie, when the Makura left, was undecided about taking Piutliair to Melbourne. hut it is thought that she will make tho trip, although the idea may be abandoned nfrer Saturday’s failure.

Lysander sustained a slight knock, and did not run at Auckland. Tt is hoped to have him fit the Wellington meeting.

According to Australian napers to hand yesterday by the. 'Makura. Air. E. Moss, one of Australia’s biggest betters, won -£26.090 when nis horse Vaals won the Epsom Handicap on the opening day of tho Australian Jockey Club’s spring mooting. Vaals cost 2900 gns. as a yearling, and has won £7510 in stakes, of which tho Epsom meant .£2895.

Roynl Charter a pronounced favourite for the Caulfield Cup, nearly ns short-priced ns was Commendation. He has also increased in favour for the Melbourne Cup. Royal Charter is the Victorian spring weight-for-ago champion and has started four times to win on each occasion.

Merry Mint and Winalot started equal first favourites for the Australian Joekey Club’s Derby.

The win of Valls in the Epsom Handicap was the first that Ms owner, Mr. E. Moss, has scored in a recognised big event. Nowadays Mr. Moss is a wealthy and extremely genero i- man, but there was a time (says the .Atelbonrno "Sporting Globe”) when he sold newspapers and race books for a Hving. He is proud to acknowledge Ms humble boyinning, and is ever ready to assist those who have not been so fortunate in life.

Nyaniba, who was third in the fillies’ division of the Matibyrnong Tria! Stakes at Flemington oi October 1, is sister to Mimetic and Joy King. (Continued on Page 15).
