PAVING IN LEVIN

A correspondent directs attention to the very satisfactory bituminous surfacing winch Levin has given about seven and a half miles of its borough streets at comparatively small cost. The borough has gone in for the single stone penetration method, and some of its , work has been down four years, and from all appearance should do for a few more years yet without top-dressing. The method adopted is to regrade and make a water-bound macadam road and roll it till there is no give in it Clean broken river metal is then spread one stone thick, and then rolled till nice and even. 'I he next operation is to sprav three-quarters of a gallon of union asphalt to tire square yard, and cover with 4in. to Jin. in chips, after which the road is rolled again. It is then left for 12 months, or thereabout, and then spray three-quarters of a gallon of asphalt to the square yard and covered with Jin. chips. It is stated the borough now has about 7J miles of road done by this method, and the average cost per mile for a 17ft. road is £l7OO, including the preparation, which in most cases meant remaking, as the roads were never previously graded. It is expected that about another 'two miles will be done in the coming season. 'The work has been carried out by Air. 11. Channings, borough overseer, Mr. 11. Skitrop acting as consulting engineer.
