THE RACING WORLD

OTAKI MEETING OPENS TODAY N A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS (By “The Watcher.”) The spring meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club will be held to-day and to-morrow. With the spell of fine weather recently the track has been placed in splendid condition,, and the meeting should be a successful- one.

Wellington persons attending the Otaki meeting to-day can leave by special train at 8.45 a.m., returning after the races; a special will also run from Palmerston North, making connection on its return with trains for more distant points. The first race is timed for 11.30 a.m.

On his home track Peshwa may run well, and of the others Bevis and Elysianor look likely.

On Mauawatu Hunt form Shining Star and Fee Simple may command most support in the Maiden Plate, and Kindle ran creditably at Dannevirke. It took Excess all liis time to beat her there. Historic and Bourse are a couple of likely three-year-olds from Trentham. The former may do best.

Anolo’s second to Lady Desmond at Awapuni' on Wednesday draws attention to his prospects in the seven-fur-long race, and it looks as if he is turning out quite a useful gelding. Essential should run well, as he is in winning form at present. Several of the lightweights present possibilities, and it will not be easy to choose between thefii. Anolo, Essential, and Rowley may do best.

Degage is at Otaki, but she may not start. A decision will be readied on the course. If she -runs she should be prominent, as she has done well since she raced at Wanganui. Rouex and Shilling Armour should be her most difficult opponents. Rouex is now racing solidly, and he has only got to repeat his form to give a lot of trouble to-dav, even if Degage is a runner.

Mandy .... 8 3 Avro was unlucky at Wanganui, and will probably be well supported in today’s face. He should run prominently. The Raider and Bronstell may be his most difficult opponents. WAITAWA HANDICAP, of 200 BOV«. Six furlongs. Crown Area. 9 0 Kilbronsyth . 8 3 Mireusonta .. 8 12 Deluge .... 7 13 Lausanne ... 8 10 With only five acceptors iu the open sprint there will not be two dividends. Deluge runs well fresh, and is nicely in, and he may be able to keep Crown Area busy at the weights.

Kilmoylcr .. 810 Bisox has a lump of weight to carry, but her form points to her running prominently. Mister Gamp ran third to her at Wanganui, and now has a 51b. advantage. The distance will suit him. Closefire won at- Marton, and should show up again. i

The last race will not be an easy one for backers, as there are too many in the field with chances. Anolo and Horotnea are a likelv pair at 8.5, and of the light-weights Blue Peter may run well, although'it will be his first race for nearly eight months. Waicullus now has 8.7, and it may trouble him. He won very easily at 'Hastings, however.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher/') Entries for the principal handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting, also for tho Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup will closo to-night at 8 o’clock. Nominations for all' events al tbo spring meeting of the Masterton Facing Club will closo on Monday at 9 p.m. Tresham, Blimp, and Buoyant have been scratched for their engagements at Otaki to-day. Although Endorse could not win the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick on Wednesday, she appears to have run a very creditable race, and it a pity that such a scanty report was cabled, lor it was of decided interest to New Zealanders, and we have still to learn by how much she was beaten. Endorse is still in tbo Wellesley Stakes at Trentham this month, and no doubt she will return to fulfil her engagement. She'will give a very useful comparison of tlfc merits of two-year-old form here ami in Australia, just as Limerick m the Champion Plate will disclose just bow good is the form of our tlirec-vear-olds and older horses. Owner-trainer S. Cleaver is having no luck with Passin’ Through. The black fellow is no good in soft ground, and as the reports state the Randwick track has been heavy ho will, it is hoped, strike better conditions for to-morrow’s • Dowling Steeplechase, run over three miles. Sydney reports state that 11. Burt was also to ride Chrysostom in his engagements, but he could only do this if Passin’ Through were not in the field. After the Avondale meeting, where he showed' good form in filling second blace in the sprint each day. Delightment was taken back to Te Rapa. In view of his engagement in the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday the Catmint—Delightful horse has been working over longer distances than usual. When nearing the close of a fast gallop at To Rapa recently Lorna D.oon stopped suddenly (says_ the “Waikato Times”) and it was with a good., deal of difficulty that she was got back to her quarters at W. C. Woods’ stable. Veterinary attention was requisitioned end Lorna Doon's affiliation was diagnosed at tetanus. She was in a bad way for some days but is now well on the rond to recovery. It will be some time, however, beiorc she can be raced again The mishap was very unfortunate as her trainer had Lorna Doon’s racing condition well forward at the time. All things considered, however, it was lucky indeed that she was saved. The percentage of recoveries in cases of this nature is ver.v small indeed. The Feilding Jockey Club has issued the programme for its spring meeting to bo held on November 30 and December 1 next. The Feilding Cup carries a stake of 400 sovs. and the Flying Handicap 250 sovs. On the second day the St. Andrew Handicap is worth 300 sovs. and the Colyton Handicap 200 sovs. The club found it necessary to make stakes reductions but the programme is a firstclass one and under present conditions no other course could lie adopted. Nominations will close on November 1. The wireless announcer from 2FC (Sydney) was slumped by the Gaelic word Piutbair, and referred to the Now Zealand mare last Saturday -as “the horse -.whose name I can’t pronounce.” Arikiwai' is another New Zealander whose name bad the majority of broadcast announcers in a tangle. The threc,year-old filly. Abbey's Ruins (Limond —Holywood), who recently had a couple of unsuccessful runs, has already finished her racing career (says the Sydney “Referee”). She has gone to Kia-Ora, and Mr. I’. Miller will use her-at the stud. At the, rate he has gone for the past few years, Mr. Miller will eventually have a wonderful collection of mares at his place. Under the headings “Now a Sparrow,” “The Hawk 'Slips Back’,’’ a Sydney writer wrote: “The Hawk of to-day is not nearly as good as was Tbo Hawk of a few seasons ago. He has slipped back badly. At Hawkesbury Tho Hawk was a runner in tho Rowley Mile, which brought out a field of moderate suburban performers. Handicapped at 9.7, The Hawk would have > been a ccrtaintv for tbo race had he been a shadow of his former self. He was fancied by his stable followers, as tho old chap had done fairly well ou the tracks. One of the first io bo seen backing tho New Zealander was Mr. Eric Connolly, who took a few' wagers amounting to several hundreds. At barrier rise The Hawk was one of the quickest to begin. Fike steadied him in order to allow some of tho others, to make tho pace, so as to conserve The Hawk’s energy. But before five of the eight furlongs had been covered it was seen that the Martian gelding was ‘not in tho race.’ Ho tired and dropped back, finishing in the ruck. Tho will to do was there, but not tho power. After the race Pike said that The Hawk was fairly pulling him out of the saddle in the first two furlongs, and he was delighted to find that his old favourite still had plenty of pace. But after that the gelding was done. Will The Hawk ever come back? He was one of the greatest milers of recent years, and his has been a brilliant career. Ho is now nine years old, and in all has raced in about 84 events. He has won 261 races has been second 10 times and third 11 times. A few weeks ago Jack Cameron, owner-trainw of The Hawk had an idea of taking Tho Hawk to Melbourne tn compete in the October Stakes at Flemington, but tiow it would be useless to make the trip if Hawkesbury form is to b» relied, upon.” GRAND KNIGHT SCRATCHED.

Auckland, October 6. Grand Knight was scratched for the Flying Handicap at 11.10 a.m.

AUCKLAND NOTES ACTIVITIES AT ELLERSLIE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 6. Rain fell heavily to-day and tho prospects for firm going at Ellerslie on Saturday do not appear to bo very bright. Tho course was fairly good this morning, but the rain to-day will cause it to cut up. Princess Ronnie is still running in the paddock and is reported to be doing well. This mare did a lot of racing last season and tho long spell will do her no harm. F. Stenning has added to, his team a four-vear-old filly by Swift Flight from Olga Patrova. She is, rather big in condition, as yet, and is only doing tho lightest of tasks. Tho Fox has been suffering u good deal with his teeth during this spring, and on that account has not been ready to race. Ho is now working along steadily on the track, although he will not be started at the forthcoming mectSpeechless and Baby Bun have both been doing well under T. Gcorgje s care and are getting into good racing condition. They have so far not had a race this season, but will be competing at the Auckland meeting which opens at Ellerslie next Saturday. , Otranto, by Quin Abbey—Bell Crisping, and Katuscha, by the same sire from I,adv Gwen, are a couple of two-vear-old fillies engaged in juvenile events at the Waikato spring meeting. Tho former is a sister to Gala Dav and the latter a half-sister to Lady Ridicule. , . , . .. Grand Knight who is engaged in the Shorts Handicap at Ellerslie, on Saturdav, was sprinted over half a mile with Jov King at Ellerslie this mornin". They covered the distance .in 51 i-ss"ee., but Grand Knight was going comfortably at the Aui 3 . ll - .. .. „ . Anciior lias arrived at Ellerslie and will contest tho Manukau Hurdles to be decided on Monday next.. Ihe Acre gelding is rather bigger in condition than when ho raced at the .Tune meeting, and with the going likely to be favourable he can be expected to run "Mr J Kemp’s two well-bred brood marcs Jolly Gay and To I’anapa (winner of the Great Northern Guineas in 1915), have been mated with hilbroney. Their owner did not breed from the above mare? last season, but each cave yearlings by Paper Money. Brampton has been showing irnproreri form in his track work during the last few weeks, and is looking nice and solid Ho is engaged in the second division of the Gordon Handicap, to tie run at Ellerslie on Saturday next, but may find the distance a triHc too lar for him. J. Buchanan’s two-year-olds are beginning to display quite a lot of pace on the track, and they appear tc bo building up nicely. This trainer has been very patient with them, and they now look as though they will repay him for the care and attention he has bestowed on them. . Glendowie, who 4 s now ‘rained at Io Rapa by A. Tinker, is stated to be doing well, and will be given a run at the Waikato Hunt meeting on October'24 (Labour Day). The Lucullus gelding contested a couple of hunters' events at tho Auckland June meeting, when lor a green horse his display wus distinctly Pr Great D Chartcr was a starter in ihe Wanganui Guineas and the Avondale, Guineas, finishing second in each of them. He should be an improved horse when he lines up for the Great Northern Guineas, and if the going i.i firm will give a good account of himself. Ho galloped well over six furlongs at Ellerslie this morning. J. Kemp’s two Paper Money two-ycai-olds are now working regularly at Ellerslie, and have settled down welt. They were in work on their owners farm previous to Lointr brought to headquarters; still, they are not as forward as the majority of tho local juveniles. They were both bred by their owner, and' are from the well-known marcs Jolie Fillo and Te Papapa. Aussie has been responsible tor several first-class track efforts since he has been at Ellerslie. Apart from the fact that he did his gallops with plates on, lie went well within himself ou each occasion that lie has splinted, and looks like being hard to beat in sprint events at the coming meeting. He has not had a race since he contested the Flying Handicap nt the Waikato meeting in May last, bit as he is such a free goer iu his track work, ho may ».ot require Romantic has arrived at hendquortert, and will fulfil his engagements at the Auckland spring meeting. Ho displayed useful form last season by winning three races, and running into a place on five other occasions. In his last two starts at the Wanganui spring meeting he ran third iu the Put.iki Handicap on tho first day, and finished fourth in the Moutoa Handicap on tho concluding day, .both races being run over a distance of eight furlongs and a half. When trained at Ellerslie ns a twq-ycar-old in the 1924-25 season. Romantic ran second to Hyde Park in tho Musket Stakes, being at that time a member of J. Williamson’s team. Cohesion ran second in the Avondale Cup and fourth in the Plumpton Handicap on tho second <lav of tho Avondale ■ meeting. This morning at Ellerslie ho was sent over seven furlongs, and wont nicely throughout. Civility strode over half a. mile at Ellerslie this morning in good style. It the going is firm Civility may take a lot of Beating at the forthcoming meeting She is engaged in the Shorts Handicap and the Flying Handicap on tho first day. , . , . Gtiscony moved nicely over six furlongs at' Ellerslie this moruing and is getting into racing trim. He was a great two-year-old last season, and before tho present season is very far advanced ho should be seen to advantage. The well-known Auckland light-weight horseman, W. Jones has definitely decided to remain at Ellerslie and will not take up residence at Wanganui as he had intended doinj. Paganelli is duo to arrive from Te Rapa to-morrow. Owing to tho heavy state of the ground be was not brought north for the Avondale meeting. Paganelli is engaged in tho Shorts Handicap and the Guineas on Saturday, and it is more than likely that the sprint race will be his mission. If tbo going is firm lie should give a good account ol himself. Star Stranger was given another eallop over a round at Ellerslie this morning, being picked up by Star God at, the six furlong post. The time was 2min. 6 l-ssec., or 2 l-ssec. outside the time occupied by him on Tuesday. This, however, was due to the greasy going when bo galloped. Star Stranger will nmv bo in demand for the Mitehclsou CupWiltshire is due to arrive at Elleixbe from the Waikato to-day. accompanied by Pendavies. Wiltshire has an engagement in the Hunters’ Steeplechase on Saturday. Ho bus had but one public outing over the big country—that was in the Greenmount Steeples at the Pakuranga meeting. After peeking at the very first iump Wiltshire carried on as far’ as the stand double, when he dislodged his nilot. Reports from Wiltshire's training ground indicate that ho has been somewhat erratic in his schooling. Some fences he jumps really well whilst ho has been troubled with others. Lack of uniformly good jumping on Saturday would mako Wiltshire’s prospects only ordinary. It was only by a stroke of good fortune and careful attention that. Lorna Doono has been saved for future racing. The Tea Tray—Lassie Doone filly, who is a member of W. Wood’s team, pulled up in a bad way after a gallop at Te Rapa, and it was found that she was suffering from tetanus. Tho filly was in a serious condition for several days, but tho danger point has now been passed. Lorna Doolie’s racing preparation was .well advanced at the time of her mishap but if now means that a lengthy period will elapse before she will bo fit to enter work again." Transformer is to keep Ins engagement in the Mitchelson Cup, and lie is duo to reach the scene this afternoon The last time Transformer was seen in action was in tho Henderson Handicap on the first day of the Avondale meeting. He made a very poor showing in that race, but the ver.v heavy nature of the going can be put <jown as the principal cause for his lack pf promuießcs. Trausfomer likes the top

of the ground best, but with the galloping surface somewhat bolding he proved a winner on his homo course in tho autumn. Rumour states that while Transformer is likely to ran a good race ou Saturday he may not bo quite keyed up for twelve furlongs. When Kingsfield contested sprint events at the Avondale meeting, he was not particularly prominent either day. Perhaps the main reason was that these were Kingfield's first outings for some time. When ho fulfils his engagements at the week-end the Cam-bridge-owned and trained candidate will bo found in better fettle, and as he is a capable sort when right ho may not be loug in doing better. Finance Act during the last financial year was .£31,174. INANGAHUA MEETING ABANDONED. BY Telegraph.—Press association. Reefton, October 6. The Inangahua Trotting Club has abandoned 'its annual race meeting on October 15.

During a storm at Auckland a startling experience befell a Remuera resident who" was chopping wood (says an exchange).. With the first flash of lightning the head of the axe was transformed into a huge-ball of fire, and, as the chop was made, the wood sizzled loudly—proof that the steel had been made almost red hot Fortunately the wooden handle of the axe was dry, and the man experienced no shock. Some farmers are of opinion that pigs will not breed well if fed exclusively on mangolds or roots, but Mr. Topham, of Kereone, Waikato, who is giving a good deal of attention to pig-breeding on his farm, maintains that this is a fallacy (reports the “Times”). Three of his stud sows, which have been fed almost entirely on mangolds, have all produced fine litters of healthy pigs, and mothers and their suckers are all doing well. His boar also has been fed on mangolds right through the season. ■
