NEW ZEALAND LEMONS
ASSISTING LOCAL GROWERS. The proposed increase in Hie duty on foreign lemons (says the Minister of Customs in an explanatory memorandum issued yesterday) will be of assistance to local growers in competition with relatively cheap supplies arriving, particularly from Italy. The increased duty of Id. per -ound represents approximately one-fifth of _ a penny per lemon, and the duty is, therefore, not high in relation to selling value, which ranges generally between Is. and 2s. <’>d per dozen. The Minister contends that the supply of locally produced lemons can be increased appreciably. Improved organisation of the trade is already assisting in the development and control of the supply, and in regard to grading, curing, and packing.
