TRAMCAR ON FIRE
MOTORMAN’S NARROW
ESCAPE
Some excitement was caused in Constable Street yesterday afternoon when a tram-car was seen suddenly to burst into flames. The car, which was bound for Miramar Junction, via Adelaide Road, left Lambton station at 5.15. When nearly opposite the Constable Street fire station it stopped, and, without any warning, the whole of the front, where the motorman stands, burst into flames.
The motorman had a narrow escape from being burned. He just managed to jump clear. All the passengers on board also made a rush to leave the car. The flames lasted but a few minutes, subsiding almost as quickly as they arose.
A Seatoun car following behind, pushed the damaged car up the hill, so that it could run down the other side to the Kilbirnie tram sheds, where it will be repaired. A similar occurrence befell a Wadestown car on Wednesday afternoon.
The need for protection against fire loss is obvious. Consult The Mercantile and General Insurance Company Ltd., Panama Street, Wellington.— Advt.
