PROBLEM OF ELDERLY VAGRANTS
MAGISTRATE MAKES A SUGGESTION Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 5. The appearance of two vagrants at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, both without work, means, and a roof over their heads prompted Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to suggest that one half of the Roto Roa inebriates’ island be reserved for these poor derelicts.
“These sort of men are no use to the community, and it is absurd to send them to gaol,” lie said, “but I cannot send them anywhere else. I am going to suggest that half of the island should be reserved for such men.” -
One vagrant was sentenced by the Magistrate to three months’ imprisonment, while the other was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that he remained witli the Salvation Army.
