LADIES’ GOLF TOURNEY

SURPRISES IN FOURTH ROUND OF CHAMPIONSHIP MISS CULLING DEFEATS MRS. GUY WILLIAMS MRS. DODGSHUN LOSES TO MRS. H. COLLINSON TJEW COURSE RECORD BY MISS 0. KAY “Dominion” Special Service. Palmerston North, October i With the beginning of the fourth round of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championships this morning, it was expected that the standard of golf displayed would be better than that of the earlier stages of the tournament. In this respect expectations were realised, but this was not so in regard to the results of to-day’s matches. Today might be called a day of surprises, and was remarkable for the elimination of two of the best lady golfers of the Domimcn-Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton, and Mrs. Dodgshun, of Dunedin. These veteran players were to-day defeated by Miss E. Culling, of Auckland, and Mrs. H. Collinson, of Manawatu, respectively. Another player who has shown fine form during the tournament, but who met more than her match to-day, was Miss M. Stevens, of Dunedin, who was defeated by Miss Upton, of Auckland. Miss Payton, of Rotorua, had all she could do to win her match with Mrs. Sclanders, of Wellington, 1 up. The games-played to-day leave Miss Culling, Miss Payton, Miss Upton, and Mrs. Collinson to fight out the semi-finals to-morrow. It is noteworthy that all the South Island'players have now been eliminated.

'Although brilliant weather conditions have prevailed since the beginning of the tournament, there was a hint of rain in the atmosphere this morning, and a bitter wind from the south-west made conditions somewhat unpleasant during the early stages of the games. As the morning advanced, however, the weather improved considerably, and towards noon there was no prospect of rain. The course is still in first-class condition. Mrs. Sclanders (Wellington) won the second and seventh in her game against Miss M. Payton (Rotorua), the other holes being halved. Mrs. Sclanders lost the eighth and was one up at the turn. Miss Pavton won the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth. At Lagoon Hill both chipped on to the green, Mrs. Sclanders holing a 20-foot putt. Miss Payton also holed out a long putt, and the hole was halved in 3 (bogey). Miss Payton took 5 at Ti Ti’s, winning the hole to Mrs. Sclanders 6. The fourteenth was halved in bogey At the fifteenth Miss Payton dropped a stroke and lost the hole, and both got sixes at the sixteenth. Miss Payton had an excellent chance to finish the game on the seventeenth, but took three putts. With Miss Payton dormy one, both got good drives away to the eighteenth. Miss Payton got bunkered, but recovered with a mashie niblick to halve in 5, two over bogey, thus taking the match 1 up. Both ladies played good goLf, and there was little difference between them.

A Surprise. 'An unexpected defeat was that of Mrs. Dodgshun (Balmacewan, Dunedin) at the hands of Mrs. H. Collinson,, the Manawatu champion. - Mrs. Collinson availed herself of her sound knowledge of the course, and played for safety throughout. Mrs. Dodgshun’s main fault was cut putts. The first hole was halved in bogey, and the second Mrs. Dodgshun did in 4 to Mrs. Collinson’s 6. The position, however, was reversed at the next hole, where Mrs. Collinson holed out in one over bogey, Mrs Dodgshun requiring one more. Mrs. Dodgshun also took the fourth in bogey, but Mrs. Collinson did Strang’s in one under to stand all square again. The sixth, seventh, and eighth were halved, but Mrs. Collinson holed out in bogey to Mrs. Dodgshun’s 4 at the ninth, to stand one up at the turn The tenth and eleventh were halved, after which Mrs. Collinson increased her advantage by holing out in 4 to Mrs. Dodgshun’s 5. The thirteenth was halved in bogey, and Mrs. Collinson got one under bogey at the fourteenth, and was 3 up. Fives halved the fifteenth, and Mrs Dodgshun took the sixteenth and seventeenth, getting bogey at the former, and one under at the latter. At the last hole Mrs. Collinson sank a long putt to take the match, 2 up.

A Hard Fought Game. Miss E. Upton (Auckland) met Miss M. Stevens (St. Clair, Dunedin), and after 16 hard-fought holes the Auckland lady won 3 and 2. The first hole was halved in 5 (one over bogey), and Miss Upton took the second and third in bogey. At the Willows, however, the position was reversed. Miss Stevens getting a 3 to Miss Upton’s 4, to reduce her deficit to 4 down. At the long hole (Strang’s) Miss Upton played an excellent 5, 1 under bogey, to take the hole 5—7. At the sixth Miss Stevens equalled bogey and took the hole, bliss Upton sank her ball in 1 under bogey at the Riverside, and as fours halved the last two holes out, the St. Clair lady stood 2 down at the turn. Fours and fives halved the first holes after the turn, following which Miss Stevens sank in bogey on the twelfth. The thirteenth was halved in bogey, and Miss Upton equalled bogey at tho next, to stand 2 up. A half in 5 eventuated at the fifteenth, and the Auckland lady took the sixteenth in bogey, and the match 3 and 2.

Mrs. Guy Williams Beaten. The other Auckland competitor, Miss I>. Culling, also passed into the semifinals by eliminating Mrs. Guy Williams, the Wairarapa star, after five extra holes had been played in order to decide the winner. Miss Culling took tho third, sixth, and eighth holes going out. The first, fourth, fith, and ninth were halved, while Mrs. Guy Williams took tho third in bogey, and the eighth in one under. At tho turn she was 1 down. Her score for the out journey was bogey (39). while Miss Culling: took one more. The tenth hole warj halved in 5, one over bogey, and Mrs. Williams, by winning the eleventh in 1 •under bogey, stood all square. This state of affairs did not last long, as Miss Culling holed out in 2 (bogey 3) at Lagoon Hill. She followed by taking the thirteenth in bogey, but at the Kraal Mrs. Williams broke bogey. Miss Culling reversed the position at tho next hole. The sixteenth went to Mrs. Williams in bogey, but fives halved the seventeenth. At the eighteenth Mrs. Williams, who stood 1 down, holed a nice putt for a 4, and stood all square. Mrs. Williams had the honour off tho nineteenth tee. and drove a longer ball than Miss Culling, who got into the ' rough, but two good iron shots gave her a one-foot putt to sink. Mrs, Williams was on to the green in 2. but a wasted putt enabled Miss Culling to halve in 4. Mrs. Williams got a long drivetotawayvbgkqj vbgk tec fit. drive away to the twentieth, but both were on tho green in 2, and two putts each were required. Miss Culling outdrove Mrs. 'Williams on the twenty-first, and her second was also longer than her opponenf’e. Mrs. Williams duffed her third, and took 4 to get on to the green. Miss Culling’s third rot her on to tho green, but her first putt missed, and the hole •was halved in 5. Both were on to the twentr-second in 1. Mrs. Wdliams had bad luck with her first pntt. the tel! just gratrfng tte edge of the hole,

enabling Miss Culling, to halve in 4. Mrs. Williams got longer ball away to the twenty-third, hut Miss Culling got into the rough with her third ant, required a fourth to get on to the green. Mrs. 'Willianis was bunkered with her third, but an iron got her out of her difficult position. Her fifth just failed to sink, and Miss Culling sank a 20foot putt to take the hole and the match, 1 up at tho twenty-third.
